BOTM 168: Pericles, Deity ... First Spoiler

Use this thread to tell us what happened in your game, up to 1AD!

Did you play the deity game or did you take the adventurer save? Did you survive? Did you meet any AI?

Zoom-in on Pericles's elephants, they are beautiful wearing a gold-plated armor. My young son now asks why there are no War Giraffes in civ iv

I took the Adventurer save.

By 1 AD, I have 8 cities. The Oracle gave me the CS Sling. I've built the GLH and the Colossus is under construction. I've contacted Bismarck, but all is peaceful, so far.

I am also doing well by 1AD, with one exception - I misclicked on a well-escorted settler and he found himself alone next to a barb axemen :cry::cry::cry: You can guess the rest ...
That contributed to me being #2 in most categories, which gets me a bit worried, normally I would be #1 at this point on Monarch, but here AIs got deity units, so not sure yet if I am going to win (or have time to finish, started playing Garden of Eden, too). Mehmed is doing surprisingly well in my game.

Hello folks,

I gave this a shot since it looked like a nice warmongering map (elepults ftw :hammer:). Contender save despite being a bit rusty (back from a long break away from civ... not sure I made the right call :scared:)

I played till 1 AD, I will do a writeup in the evening since I took plenty of nice pics... Here is a preview meanwhile.

Spoiler :
7 cities, 1 academy, 1 scientist ready to bulb philo (holding it since I want buddhism to spread), and one settler in the galley to settle another oversea city.

Well no elepults this time it seems

Cheers,
Ras

There were no Germans on the island were I arrived, Bismarck also did not attempt to settle a city there, maybe because of adventurer's save.

Yeah deities are expanding like nuts!
Spoiler :
I didn't get a chance to send a settler there in time. I still got the gem/sugar site (placed this way so I can flip the barb city with the second border pop) though and I will get the eastern fish too it seems. It will help with the culture fight and make another whipping center. I really wanted those cities for the improved trade routes (oversea) and happy resources.

Note that Charlie sneaked a city too (claiming two bananas and gem!).

writeup:

Spoiler :

Start looks gorgious. Scout moves NW-> NW but reveals no more food so I SIP. Early teching was Agriculture -> mining -> BW to hook up the corn then reveal copper and enable chops/whips.

Here is what my scout reveals... It appears we are islanders... which sucks! No elephant rush as the starting screenie promised! Still, the land looks good. I start marking fogbusting spots.

One turn later, I spot the first barb archer... I had forgotten how they spawn quickly! :eek2:
I am growing building a pair of warriors for police and fogbusting (together with my scout)

I grow size 4 before starting on the first settler. This is something I am not used to but here AIs aren't fogbusting for us since they are oversea, and we aren't as much pressed for land as we could be.

Once the settler completes, we claim the eastern (unpillageable - if that's a word -) fish. This city will quickly help Athen, can grow floodplain cottages for the capital, and can be connected with only 2 roads.

I whip a worker in Athen and overflow into an axe for barb defense.

A few turn later, we meet the first AI, Bismarck.

Then it's Charlie's wb that says hello. (zealout alert: on)

After a granary and before a library, Sparta does our own exploring workboat. I want those foreign oversea TRs up as soon as possible.
We are working on aesthetics. I thought it would be a good trade bait for alphabet. And the Paya/Zeus statue would be cool for failed god (gold and ivory on our island).

Athen does a second settler that claims wheat, clam, and fish.

The wb is sent to explore the northern island ( a barb city has already spawned there)

I start trading with Charlie to get some diplo going (did the same with Bis)

I was a bit late on Athen library. Still I will hire 2 scientists there after that to grow some GPs. Note how Charlie is already up to 7 cities lol

Our wb scouts luxuries oversea.

Bismarck is going crazy with wonders! I would gladly take Berlin! (After BW, I pondered going Sailing then masonry before pottery/writing to give a shot at the GLH... good thing I stay focused and realist )

Aesthetic is in 1000 BC... but sadly nobody has alpha

I go sailing (to get oversea), then myst/ meditation at 0% science (I just discover than one needs 2 monuments to build Zeus statue , med is for the paya/philo bulb) while accumulating enough gold for alpha.

Empire and dotmap (the gold city was tricky, not sure it is the best, but it will be good early on and let room for a whipping center claiming 2 floodplains, clams, and copper):

A turn later, F. Bacon founds an academy in Athen (I plan to leverage failed gold from aesthetics wonders)

Settling Thebes shortly after (Note the axe fogbusting in the east). I also met Mehmet this turn.
He is hindu and has enough on his hands already. (hopefully he is already busy elsewhere, and didn't found us tempting in the interturn)

This turn Bismarck settles our precious luxury island

Worse, Charlie joins the party (well, better him to clear the jungle than us)

Spoiler :

Finally, we finish alphabet (those damn AIs didn't went for it! I should really learn what AIs tech based on their flavour... oh well)

We don't look so backward... for now

Some trading is in order.

I settle argos so we get both gems and sugar and Assyrian with two border pops.

Next tech goals are currency, COL, and CS (layed down some cottages in Athen in preparation for bureaucracy)

We settle Mycenae and Knossos just after currency (held the settlers a couple of turn to not kill research)

A few turn later, someone (prolly Bis) completes the Zeus statue, we'll be able to keep the science slider high :yumyum:

Charlie is finally pleased (no Buddhism spread yet), so I ask kindly his gold... but he refuses :pat: (it sucks to be weak and greedy )

Gems are up and running!

More gold incoming from failed wonders! (Note that I am working on my third GS, the second one is kept for a philo bulb. I could have done it already but I wanted to maximise the chances for a religion spread from Charlie or Bis... this hasn't worked as of now. But nobody has philo so lib race is still looking great)

Bismarck asks kindly currency so I obviously give in (I have no army for now, so I might as well keep him happy...)

More trading.

And trade situation at 1 AD (overall situation is a few posts above)

The AIs are getting away with techs but it's not that bad. I plan on bulbing philo/paper/education (with maybe a switch into philo/caste during a GA if I can manage one... note to self, grow 2 cities to be starved later) then libbing something close to military tradition. Plan is to take someone out with cuirassiers, then someone else with cavs, then finish them all :D.

We will see how it goes. :eekdance:

Thanks for the writeup. Shame Photobucket messed up all your pictures, but that's what they do. New tactic after outright removing them, I guess.

Played Deity to 1AD, and it's not going very well :-(

Forget exactly how I moved the scout, but think it was NE because I wanted to look for a reason to move that way. Saw extra food further north, and settled on the PH. Got some barb troubles early on preventing expansion, but I did settle the gold. Loads of barb galleys too, from nearby islands, and they've won a ridiculous amount of 30% fights. I only settled 5 cities on our continent, as I figured a 6th would totally tank the economy/tech rate. And once I finally decided to try for Elepults, I had to go all in. Hadn't attacked yet by 1AD, but I started to ship units across around that time, and attacked shortly after.

Unfortunately everybody got longbows (well) before 1AD, so I'm not at all comfortable about winning. But at least I have to try. Really tricky when you can't gradually re-supply across land, but have to spend many turns shipping them across. While the AI can mass-whip, with crazy bonuses. But we shall see how it goes.

Bismarck and Sitting Bull (met the latter shortly before 1AD) have been spamming wonders. The only hope I have is to capture Berlin with Mids and GLH. Surprised I could get first to CoL and the religion so close to 1AD, but I did. Then bulbed Philo. Made an Academy with the first GS, but it was probably a bad choice. Commerce-poor capital, and with producing so many units in preparation for war, the economy tanked to unit upkeep, despite a big capital. But bulbing Math always feels like such a terribly choice, with heaps upon heaps of "wasted" beakers.

Mehmed is a monster with 12 cities. Guess he had tons of good land to REX onto. While I was getting ready to attack, another war broke out, between SBull and Mehmed. Charlie is plotting and has been for a while.

Took forever for the AIs to get alpha, but I didn't do it myself. Just hate starting to do that, and then suddenly everybody have it. Took Aesthetics and finally used that to get Alpha, and a little later IW. At some point I got Currency too, and Calendar. Slow-teching towards Buro at 0%, but it's going to be a long while.

Anywho... not looking very bright at 1AD, and it felt like the game was running away from me. The AIs teching like bats out of hell. Didn't settle on the island nearby, but barbs did, and Bismarck. Charlie then stole the barb city. Surprised Bismarck didn't take it sooner. Frustrating to be one lousy tile short of circumnavigation when I finally got a workboat all around. Would have helped a good deal to get troops to Germany faster.

Thanks for the writeup.

Your welcome.

Got some barb troubles early on preventing expansion, but I did settle the gold. Loads of barb galleys too, from nearby islands, and they've won a ridiculous amount of 30% fights

Fogbusting is key (early BW too :))! I had loads of barb galleys too, mine has already won three fights (better be lucky than good) but I am going with triremes now to avoid bad bits.Maybe they will help me getting that 10xp units I lack badly currently

I went for a very early library (AH->Writing iirc), and I think I bit the bullet and just build really many warriors and fogbusted the entire coastline.

Retired at 1AD with the Deity save when it was obvious I couldn't win. Germany had most of the Wonders, including GLH (725 BC), Mids (450), and Colossus (75), with the Oracle to Charlie in 1120. It was the Ottomans, though, that were way ahead of everybody with 1713 in score and 10 cities. The other three were all around 1150 with 8 cities, and I had 744 with 7 (38 pop). Worst was that I had no foreign trade routes because of barb cities and galleys. In the Final spoilers I summarize my next 4 attempts (because I love to beat my head against the wall).
