I took the Immortal save. By 1 AD, I have eight cities, one of which was captured from barbs. The barbs were certainly a nuisance when they showed up, but they didn't do any real damage to me.

I've built the Pyramids and switched to Representation for the science boost, which is good because my economy is struggling.
