[BTS] BOTM 219: Lincoln, Emperor - First Spoiler - 1AD

3 city Jumbo rush, took most of Mao..
Wow. That's unbelievable. When did you start the attack on Mao and how many units did you have then? There are not many trees in the starting area. I thought an axe-catapult army would require 4+ cities and elepult army would require 5+.

City # is somewhat overrated, with 3 close cities costs were very low.
Along with bulbing maths (using Philo) i started on whipping Cats rather early, makes up for having fewer cities.
Lincoln has maybe the best trait combo for this rush :)

Hmm i was thinking about some magic hints, but it's just not being afraid of AIs that are (much) bigger cos they will do silly unit movements during war.
Jumbos have no real counter (and Spears will usually not attack too cos they will face losing odds against Cats), i waited patiently until i felt the army # matches with what my scouting units saw.

Can recommend not looking at attack dates that much. Sometimes they have bigger stacks close, sometimes walking in will be easy.
Sometimes it's better waiting until their worst enemy changes and units move further away.
Or maybe even changing my own target AI.

Checking..i had Construction 1000 BC, HBR 800 and attacked Mao on 550.
Darius was plotting forever and i waited for his move, until Mao moved units away and then i just attacked.
30 turns or so later Darius finally backstabbed me

Hi

I thing this is the first BOTM I am playing. I maybe downloaded a save in the (very far) past, but never uploaded anything.

I took the Contender save. Settled 1S from the starting position. Went for two workboats, mining - BW, stole two workers from Darius and pretty much whipped the rest of the expansion phase to start up. Didn't find any copper in the scouted area, so decided to go for elepulting Persia. Darius was already weakened form losing workers early game.
It's now 50BC. I settled four cities and just took two cities from him. The capital and the one next to the gold. Razed a city settled on the northern horses to prevent wrecking the economy too much. Darius is now left with another two. i think I will raze one and leave him with the barb captured one. everyone hates him anyway, so he is most likely history anyway.

I am now left with 10 elephans and 6 catapults. Will continue to whip catapuls and try to take out Pacal next. He has the Hindu shrine which might help me a bit. Nobody is close to Feudalism, so I should have some play from the elepult left.

The interesting thing is nobody built the mids yet. Mao has The great lighthouse in Bejing, so I need to see if Maya is the one to attack or him.

I am now on the path towards Machinery - Engeneering. Will see how quickly I can get there and improve my odds of taking the AI out towards domination. Mao could be a hard opponent to take out. He already has 8 cities.

OK, now off to read the other reports. Let's see if I can finish this one.

Cheers

Challenger save
By AD1 I had 5 cities. When I saw China and Persia border so near, I decided to build no extra warrior for escort. When my 2nd settler was heading towards fish/rice spot, a bear spawned...I waited for 1 turn and Mao's settler arrived just before I could settle. I had to settle on the jungled rice.
My deity experience told me that I could always get maths from tech trading by T90. So I teched horseback riding-(after getting alphabet from Sumail)currency-COL-bulbed philosophy in BC50. Still no one wanted to sell maths...That's probably the biggest mistake I made in this game.

i waited patiently until i felt the army # matches with what my scouting units saw.
I usually start first catapult war with 25+ units on the front line. The merit of a larger army group is that wounded catapults do not need to stop and heal. They can follow the army and just do the bombardment job. When the super-medic joins the group, those wounded units can take turns to heal outside city. By doing so it would require a few turn less to capture the first 3 cities and cripple the target AI faster.

This. I replayed the start couple times to find the best strategy and imho an elepult rush with 3 close cities is actually easier on this map than having more cities, I was mostly struggling with getting math asap (I manually researched, not bulbed), and it is much easier when keeping costs under control. When attacking Mao early, you do not need that many units since he also has few cities and units (contender save) and since all my 3 cities had a decent food, whipping an adequate army quickly was not that difficult. I got 9 cities by 1AD, with Mao dead and most Sumeria conquered. But that was after couple replays and contender save. And Mao also built GLH for me, but staying solvent while conquering was anyway a challenge.

Hi :) I've been lurking in these forums a while, and decided to try out this game.

I took the Deity save, despite the warnings. Turns out the warnings were accurate :crazyeye:

Went for the elepult rush like the others. Plan was to bulb math, then get to HBR and Constr as fast as possible. Through a tactical error, I lost a warrior sentry to a barb warrior at 25% odds and thus lost my 3rd city  So I had to spend resources replanting it.

I did make it to Math, HBR, and most of the way through Constr. Then Mao attacks on turn 90  He had enough swords to hamstring me. I played risky in hopes of getting peace with him with some pop left in my other two cities that weren't his initial targets, but that didn't pan out. So I guess I retire on turn 110 after losing Washington. It was one of the wars where the AI only goes WHEOOHRN for only 1 or 2 turns, so I was not ready.

I think I should have tried liberating a junk city to Mao in the extreme early game? :hmm: I was planning on attacking Darius since Protective is scary. Even gave into one of Mao's demands to stop trading, which I almost never do. Ah well. Thanks for the game!

Amazing how many new forum players we still get (maybe more than VI :D), welcome welcome.

Regarding maths @MirrorGuard , your experience isn't unique..never is available for me when i want a trade for it :)
So bulbing was my plan right away.
Hanging Gardens & unlocking plenty other techs makes them stingy.
Not as bad as Construction, but can still be a too long delay often.

Getting math in a trade is possible often enough, but it's also risky enough that you can't really rely on it happening.
Depends on what AIs you play with too. If you have Wilhelm or Mansa or someone like that it's easier.

And I agree with Fippy, so nice with more players! Welcome out of the lurking shadows @Ocre307 !

My first BOTM.

Settled on ivory which having now read everyone else's spoilers looks like it was probably the wrong choice...

Got the hint about being boxed in and got the fish spot next to Mao. I did consider settling on the rice but was worried I would cede the fish to cultural pressure - guess this wouldn't have been an issue if I had comitted to early war with Mao which I probably should have done given he had GLH and his map position.

Was quite pleased to get the pig spot which his settler would have got one or two turns after I did (it made it to the tile SE of Boston.)

Got a fourth city 1N of the silk, called it a day on city building and went for elepult. I rarely do this and I have little feel for emperor level (spending most of my time losing at deity) - I bulbed alphabet and traded it for IW and meditation so I could chop down some jungles and make some cottages to keep my economy afloat.

Got Buddhism from Mao and given that Darius had 6 cities and everyone hated him I thought he should be my first target. DOW'd turn 106 with 8 war elephants, 6 catapults and a couple of archers.

1 AD I have captured 3 of Darius' cities and going strong.
