Emperor save- I think 2 settlers for human actually made it easier for the human player

Knew I wanted to settle both cities on a river since commerce is the obvious bottleneck here.

    Went mining->bw->wheel->agri->pottery

Put a couple chops into SH which let me tech math while expanding pretty fast

Expanded as normal, I thought 6-7 cities instead of the normal 4-5 for an elepult would work since the extra settler helps so much, and I was still able to get all the tech at around the same time as a normal game

Not pictured here is Brennus attacking Ramses. I could either attack Qin or Genghis and after some thought I chose Genghis since it would be a 3v1 and take out an annoying opponent.

Wilhelm was holding his own which is great, made for a really easy war

11 cities+1 more next turn, 12cats+14eles left, I'll probably just turn around and kill wilhelm next.
Qin might be a small problem once he gets longbows/chukonus so I might just wait till cuirs or rifles for him
Or I might just build courthouses everywhere and double down on elepult and wipe out the whole continent

I also accepted my limitations and went with the Adventurer/Emperor save. I thought Genghis would be my first target, but when QSH tried sneaking a settler west past the southern border I had tried to establish, I killed its escort and grabbed it as an extra worker in 1240 BC. Then I made peace.

In 800 BC, I went to war with Genghis. I captured four cities, including Karakorum, before making peace for some tech in 175 BC. Brennus and Ramses have also fought a war, while Ramses has been spamming wonders. And that's where things stand at 1 AD.

I'm stopping (deity), survival here would be luck based.
    Spoiler :
Genghis with 5 cities on T41, grabbing copper + border tension. Even had corn plundered on T33(!). While i usually enjoy hard games, i find that situation to be highly uncomfy and too difficult.

I did get the copper spot but random number generator was not always on my side.

Qin got busy in around T70 and Dow on me in BC650 bringing in Vikings as his ally. The next turn GK joined in the fight against me and took one of my cities. I can easily handle one of them but not so many. Civ4ScreenShot0033.JPG Civ4ScreenShot0033.JPG

Ouch, in my game copper was taken by Genghis before i even had my settler out.
Needed an extra warrior cos of barb archers roaming there..i hated this start with deer everywhere but not in our BFC ;)

I had little hopes to begin with and pretty much like in Fippy’s game when I just started walking with my first produced settler to the bronze, GK grabbed the spot with his 5th city and hence I abandonded ship.

INot in the mood for deity mindset either. Got to this point (a few weeks ago):
    Spoiler :

    Civ4ScreenShot0041.JPG

It played awkward. I didn't play it that well either I think. My research reached snale speed at 4 cities, while AI expands like maniacs, settling annoying spots. It was a bit depressing. Now I certainly don't have the time to pick it up again if wanted to.

    Christ, this has been bloody!

Fortunate with RNG early on, a bear refused to attack my scout, another bear attacked him a few turns after, and lost. Then a panther attacked him (at full health again), and also lost. But then proper barbs came. They plundered the ivory, and later the silver. It was too late to assist against that, but I'm glad I went Archery. Made a slow start even slower, but at least I'm alive at 1AD.

This was close. I basically said "funk you and tried". Kinda got screwed on the first combat anyway.
    Spoiler :
    BOTM 223-T40 barbs.jpg

At this point Brennus has a size 10 capital... yeah...

Aggressive settling in Genghis' face, but I had to try to nail that copper, which meant inner ring. Again, glad I went archery early here, cause there is a barb causing problems right away.
    Spoiler :
In fairness he ended up invading Genghis, who already has a spear and axe nearby. My archer hadn't moved yet, so was in control. BOTM 223-T52 copper settle.jpg

Brennus started plotting around 2000BC. I've got -2 border pressure with Qin, and -1 with Genghis. Anything can happen.
Almost constant world war since Brennus kicked it off against Ramesses shortly after he started plotting. He asked me to join, I had no idea where Ramesses was, so I accepted (in 1200BC). We've been at war since.

Fight for settlements too. Saw Qin was coming over to my rice, so had to whip the capital down to size 2 again, and hope I could beat him.
    Spoiler :
Didn't dare to go where I wanted, but it always feels good to beat an AI settling race :)
    BOTM 223-T77 beat Qin settler.jpg

-2 border pressure with Genghis, and he starts plotting. Not good!!

One turn later he declares. On Willem! Ragnar joins in too. Practically a world war already. Only Qin isn't active. Brennus takes an Egyptian city. Which happens to be the holy city with a shrine, and Oracle. Dang. Genghis takes a city off Willem. Then another.
    Spoiler :
    ****

    BOTM 223-T91 Qin DOWs.jpg

Totally caught with my pants down. Had gotten out some axes, but they were 1 turn away from assaulting a barb city in the far west. Horrible timing. They turned around and I looked over things. Okay, not too bad. Those southern cities can perhaps hold if I get out a spear each in time. He seem to have some chariots down there. But I didn't see this:
    Spoiler :
    BOTM 223-T91 Qin stack.jpg

Cold-whipped a spear, but of course the city had zero chance. Got boned by the RNG too, which didn't help, but no way two guys would have held that no matter what.

The so-and-so is coming at me from every direction. Every single city is under threat. He even comes through Genghis' territory with two chariots and an archer and busts my copper! That was our lifeline. Nothing I could do either, though I'm glad there was a spear in the capital that could come to the rescue, which meant the city held, even if the copper was lost.
    Spoiler :
Hoped he didn't have more buggers coming from that direction, and sent two workers to improve the mine a few turns later. Thankfully they lived. But we were without metal for 5-ish turns. BOTM 223-T94 Qin ruins copper.jpg

He brings a lot of guys, but I'm feeling more optimistic about holding the rest of the cities.
    Spoiler :
    BOTM 223-T96 Qin attacks.jpg

We don't lose any more men in that fight, and get a GG. In T97 it's finally possible to trade Alpha. I went Aesthetics, but had really bad luck in that only people I were at war with had Alpha, and Brennus as the only other guy went Aesthetics himself. WTF. But now Willem got to Alpha, so that was okay. Next turn I got IW+Math+Fishing with Genghis for Alpha+Aesthetics. Who knew, we actually have Iron!! Too dangerous to improve, but good to know.

Brennus tosses us Meditation, which was nice of him. We're paying 25 in unit upkeep here, so yeah, the economy isn't grand.

Felt like I had enough spare units to improve the iron and get out some jaguars too. Sadly Qin has gotten catapults now, and they are moving in. But so do I.
    Spoiler :
    BOTM 223-T103 counters.jpg

I'm surprised he doesn't wait for the siege, but attacks that very turn. They all die. Meanwhile I was able to retake Teotihuacan, although we did get boned by the RNG there and lost many good men at nice winning odds.

Those two encounters were thankfully enough to finally have sensible talks with him. He stopped wanting a city, and we shook hands. He gave me Masonry+20g (originally Priesthood+40g). Perhaps I could have gotten more, but it was the first offer I tried. Anyway, I'm glad we got peace again before he sent a pack of catas our way.

Axes and jaguars then went back for the barb city, and finally took it. Guess Genghis was busy. Everybody are!

A few turns later I get HBR from our friendly Chinese neighbours for Aesthetics+5g. Then full pelt at Construction. The plan was to redeclare on him with catas and hopefully a few elephants. Sadly Qin has other ideas. I suddenly notice he has Machinery... and sure enough, there they are... Cho-Ko-Nus :(

I'm therefore now quite torn on what to do. I'm worried about my south, east and north-east, as Qin surrounds us. Genghis is busy for the time being, so it made sense to have a go at Qin. But perhaps not with cho-ko-nus. But Genghis has a million cities on hills. Not ideal either.

Naturally we have fallen WAY behind on techs here. Atm I'm trying to get to Compass, which I hope will net us Currency. Had to self-tech Sailing after such a long time, because nobody wanted to share, or I had nothing on them. Tech situation. Brennus is flying with a pile of wonders and two shrines.
    Spoiler :
    BOTM 223-T115 techs.jpg

Hinduism FINALLY spread to us this very turn. Only took 4000 years, sheesh. Big lovefest otherwise, and ofc I didn't go Jewish with nobody else having that, though it randomly spread to two cities a good while back. Here is an overview map of sorts. Not pretty, but with the barb city and the filler settled this turn (thankfully it can work the banana, which made it worth it I think), we do have 6 cities. The barb city in the west is actually really good. It even has horses. I didn't know that for a long time, because I kept postponing AH (took Pottery before).
    Spoiler :
Ooops, forgot to settle before I saved and closed down, but there is a settler on the X.
    BOTM 223-T115 map.jpg

I'm glad to be alive after so much action, and getting DOWed on, but it looks bleak to get nice progress. Very late to elepults, and it looks difficult to take on Qin now. But I feel like I have to try something, because we have a pretty big army, and I've gotten out a few catas, with more on the way. Still have forests to chop too.

Early in the war I envisioned submitting a proper loss for the first time, but we're still around, so that's nice I guess :)

    Very cool Pangaea :)
I would have liked to play this one, but shows how early rng can mess you up on deity.
Had no chance on copper with Genghis being there before i had my first settler out, without things felt hopeless.

Thanks, Fippy. Yeah, it's rough early on, and so much depends on RNG in various forms. Technically he got the copper in my game too, but in outer ring, so it was possible for me to claim it. Got up a monument asap, and was able to hold it, but it was barely for a while.

Can't imagine I'll get anywhere near a win here, because the AIs are teching out of sight and it's really too late to try anything with elepults now. Qin has cho-ko-nus already, and probably close to longbows. Only chance is Genghis I suppose, but he's a mad unit spammer with keshiks that can snipe from anywhere. Loads of cities on hills, but at least he's busy. However, if he bribes in Qin, I'm done for.

Qin must have daggered me I guess. Started plotting in T88 (I had a savename), and declared in T91, which I suppose technically is T90. No warning at all :(

Took so many pictures during the sessions, so here are a few more:
    Spoiler :
A nice little world war here.

Friendly relations, but without open borders for some reason. Which means Brennus' missionaries can't get to me, nor Qin for that matter.

BOTM persuaded me to play this further than I would have if I'd rolled the map myself and I made it to 1AD (just) which makes posting here seem more satisfying.

Like Fippy I lost the copper before I even had a chance to claim it - maybe I was too slow - SIP -> Ag, mining, BW - I didn't even have BW by the time my first settler was out on T32 to know that I'd lost the copper a few turns before. Genghis was plotting from shortly after turn 30 - would have had no chance if he'd attacked me but he chose WvO. I tried for elepults but was too slow - wasn't ready until the turn WvO after was eliminated (T110) and at this point I'd whipped too many units not to go to war. Lost a bit of concentration in my disappointment and really sealed the defeat by not begging off Qin whilst he was friendly before my DOW.

11 city Genghis was no joke and then he got longbows the turn I declared. Did take a couple of cities and if he had agreed to talk I might have been able to limp on a bit further but I've taken heavy losses, all my troops are at the front with Genghis and now I have a big stack from Brennus on the edge of Ttlatelolco ready to march through my interior. Shame as with 7 cities, good land and near a GS for engineering bulb and another for academy if I could have survived the war, things would have been interesting at least.

I set this aside a for a few weeks after getting attacked by Qin in 225 BC, wondering if it was as hopeless as it looked. Yup, yup, it was. Qin had a stack of 16 that quickly took one city and then GKhan Dow'd the next turn. I got to 5 cities and managed to snag the copper up north, but I don't think there were any other wars to distract the AI from turning their attention to poor little me.
