I started this one with a focus on commerce and did as much as I could to get cottages going around the capital. The starting area is good but probably with only enough space for a modest number of cities before needing to strike out.
I found the AI tech rate to be painfully slow and accepted I would be self researching almost everything I wanted. I decided to go for Horseback Riding after getting commerce techs and had my sights on Babylonia in the BCs. But my cavalry of Numidians were absolutely woeful against garrisoned units in cities and I had to pull out after heavy losses. I resorted to fighting a skirmish war for now and teching for macemen who would be back to knock on the Babylonian doors in the ADs.

I settled in place and also focused on the economy. I Oracled Currency, but didn't pursue other wonders. At 1AD I'm at 9 cities and 41 pop. The 4 known AIs just have 4 or 5 cities, so in that sense it doesn't look like any major trouble on the horizon. Tech apart from Currency is up to CS, Calendar, Monarchy and HBR in the bag and a turn from construction. The plan is to acquire Babylon with elepults soon.

I also settled in place and followed a similar opening. Hammurabi had two cities close to my borders (one a barb city he conquered), both guarded by archers. I declared war on him in 325 BC, and my Numidians captured those cities quickly. When my forces pushed forward to his other cities, further south, I discovered he had spears and swords to guard those, so I'll be waiting for some catapults to continue the offensive.

With those captured cities, I have a total of eight at 1 AD.
