For Civ4, pretty much the two names for the same thing these days, but GOTM is a bit more general. GOTM (game of the month) has been what the games have been called for every version of Civ. Originally the Civ4 games were called Civ 4 GOTMs, but then when the Warlords expansion pack came out, we started running separate games for vanilla Civ4 and Warlords, so to distinguish them we kept the name GOTM for vanilla, and used WOTM for the Warlords games. Then the BtS (Beyond the Sword) expansion pack came out, so we started calling the BtS competitions BOTMs. Then as time rolled on, we stopped doing vanilla and Warlords games because interest declined plus I'm not sure if it's even possible to load up vanilla/Warlords games anymore on the most recent versions of Windows. That left only the BtS games, which for those historical reasons we still refer to as BOTMs.
