BOTM 287: Pacal, Monarch - First Spoiler - 1AD

Use this thread to tell us what happened in your game, up to 1AD.

Did any of the Four Horsemen cause you trouble? How about the confusing combination of leaders and civilizations? (For the record, I chose your leader and civ, but I allowed the computer to randomly select those for the AI.)

I settled on the elephants which proved to be a rather ok capital for a fantasy map. With the map toroidal and heavier maintenance I tried not to expand too heavily nor too far and concentrated on the economy. Unfortunately,

the aptly named Death came knocking at a new town to the west at the pigs. It had 2 combat warriors defending it and the Horseman was at 4/6 health so I had some hopes of holding on to it, but on subsequent turns the warriors succumbed and the city was razed. I never saw any horsemen again and the city was resettled later. At 1AD I'm at 9 cities and 39 pop, 1 barb city I captured among those. A second one should be added soon.

I Oracled currency and have ziggurats in half the cities so tech is kept afloat, though still not impressive at 80 bpt sustainable. Other than currency, I have calendar and CoL is nearly done. Not sure what VC to go for yet.

How about the confusing combination of leaders and civilizations?

Indeed somewhat confusing with a Monty and Aztecs running around separately and being Pacal with the Mayans next door.

For the record, I hate fantasy maps. Too many ice and desert tiles, FAR too many tundra tiles, jungle everywhere . I SIP to avoid an ivory tower syndrome. Famine took one warrior, later an archer defeated hurt War. Never saw Death and I presume Hades. 1AD had 6 cities, I think I lost Oracle by 1 turn. Bulbed Theology from a GP, chose Confusionism, since the map was confusing enough. Built Henge and GWall. Can't remember what happened before and after 1AD so won't say more. Hate the map, hate the other civs, no natural borders or barriers so the map favors warmonger players. Probably won't finish this. Too bad, I like to kill Putler's idol Stalin whenever possible.
Now to wait for Botm 288. At least it's probably not a deity game.

I settled on the beavers. I did a Civil Service win from the Oracle, by bulbing Math. I was very happy that things were going great, until Barbarian Death (horse archer) captured my second city. I lost 2 warriors, and 2 Vultures, and a spearman getting it back, plus the loss of a worker. The library was razed, but the granary remained. If I had any hair I would be pulling it out. I think what happened is a neighbor built the Great Wall and I got a wave of barbarians, mostly spearmen, messing with me, and was just being too focused on the CS-sling and well, even if I hadn't I think I'd have been burnt.

VC not decided yet. Maybe Space or Culture... too late for a religion win to be competitive, though that could be a fallback option. Emotionally, I just want to kill them all... but I am leading in every category respective to the AI, so VC choice is kind of critical right now for the BOTM competition. I'll probably go on the warpath now with ElePults, but once I reach a certain point I'll make a new call. I don't have the cards right now
