BOTM 288: Asoka, Emperor - First Spoiler - 1AD

Use this thread to tell us what happened in your game, up to 1AD.

Have you met all of the AI yet? Has one of them taken a considerable lead? Or have your actions changed that "fated" outcome?

Reading Requirements
If you are participating in BOTM 288, then you MUST NOT read this thread unless EITHER
  • You have reached at least 1 AD in your game, OR
  • You have submitted your entry

Posting Restrictions
  • Do not disclose ANY events or information gained post 1 AD.
  • Do not reveal your final result if that happened after 1 AD.
  • Do not discuss the location of resources that may not show up before 1 AD (Iron is OK, coal and oil are not)
  • Do not post any savegame file from the game. Discussions and screenshots are fine but not actual games

Nice and peaceful game for the Indians so far. We considered attacking Cyrus before he hooked up his metals, but ultimately decided against it. I suppose some other players will have chosen this path.

We met only 5 of the 6 AI. But interestingly enough, none of them has taken a significant lead, 8 is the most cities a couple AIs have. Of course Ramesses did his usual thing and stockpiled wonders (we grabbed SH and Qin built GLH). But Gilgamesh has just declared war on the Egyptians, so it should slow Ramesses a little bit.

We settled on the PH 1E and were happy with that choice. With coast to the N and W, barbs did not cause us much trouble. We were able to expand to 13 cities (took 3 cities from barbarians), and have 51 pop at 1AD.

Tech is up to Currency, CoL, Calendar, Construction, HBR and Monarchy, and we are 5 turns away from CS. Cyrus has been trading us ivory, a decision he will possibly regret in the near future. :mischief:

I’m loving these fast workers, one of the most fun units in CIV.

My game is similar to C63’s with two differences. I used warriors to spawnbust the east, north and west and as a consequence, no barb cities popped up. So I have 8 cities and 52 pops.

Also instead of the CoL-CS line I teched Aesth-Lit because I wanted the Glib scientists for bulbing Astro to meet the final AI (GLib = 100 BC). Food is so scarce it’s not easy to run scientists.

But getting CS sooner is also helpful for spamming farms and irrigating the agri resources. Trade-offs.

Like C63 I missed the window to deprive Cyrus of metal. Stupidly in my case because I had a chance to grab that iron tile to the south, along with the stone. I got worried about my maintenance costs.

The other defect of my spawnbusting, peaceful game was not being able to build HE early on. Bad planning with early Lit. Alas. That first GG is so cheap. Plus this game required lots of workers and I hand to hand build them. Sigh.

As for wonders, Rameses already has six! Including pipping me on the Oracle by one turn. I got 100g instead of MC. 😭 Very annoying.

The tech leaders are Rameses and Hannibal. Rameses has spammed 9 cities, Hannibal oddly only has 3.

Gil hates Rameses but hasn’t DoWed. Gil is Hindi, everyone else is Jewish with Rameses proselytizing like a maniac. No AP yet but Rameses has Theology so it’s only a matter of time.

Overall, fun game! Thx again, MG.

Looks like I'm not doing too badly compared to the real players. 7 cities and 39 pop, with Oracle (for MC) and just finished MoM. Egypt leads with 784 in score, Indians with 724, Sumer with 678, and the others are back a bit. Carthage is, as usual, doing quite well in tech, but unusually has only 3 cities--everyone else has 7 to 10. I'm going to start a Golden Age this turn (1 AD) to pump out cats and war elephants, which will be used against the ivory provider, Cyrus. He has 10 cities but is the most backward. I'm currently researching Feudalism in the hope that I can get him to capitulate in one round of war, but we'll see. Fun game, much more relaxing than the preceding Deity-ish one.

I settled 1E for the PH...nice spot really. I decided to settle Bombay N as it had two silvers, but most importantly some food share and could work the gold when Delhi wasn't. Vijay went SW a ways to grab copper, rice and cow. And Palp went E quite a bit and settled on marble and grabbed the other copper over there. All 4 were settled by 2000bc. However, it is important to note that I was harassing Cyrus from the beginning...stealing workers and preventing his settler spam. After the first four cities I gradually settled Eastward toward the E coast blocking Qin, although not really blocking much but taking the decent spots, and grabbed the crab, fur, iron to the NW.

I eventually worked up an army of Swords and cats and took 2 Persian cities including Persopolis which was actually a deceptively nice city, though a tad culture crushed at first by Hanny. I wanted Cyrus' last city near Qin, but I had bribed Qin in for kicks and could not get enough troops over in time to nab it. Not a big deal.

11 cities by 1AD, including 1 barb city on the E coast.

I'll probably chill for now and focus on research. My tech has not been spectacular but I do have CS/Bureau and then will go Music. With the marble I should get TGL, Parth and hopefully Mauso.

Everyone is Jewish but Giggles, which was founded by Rammbo. I'll probably pursue something more peaceful, but will still fight for more land.

(Oh..i almost ragequit very early on. It was quite bizarre and embarrassing. Barbs were not much of a concern very early, and I had a couple of axes out, but I was also focused on Cyrus and I lost a couple of warriors to him by just being stupid. That caused me to neglect some of my spawnbusting. At some point, a barb warrior snuck in from the NW approaching Bombay (sliver city). I placed a defensive warrior to stop him, but otherwise, I was not concerned. Well he defeated my warrior and caught be with my pants down. Bombay was size one from working gold and had not grown yet. I really had no way to get a unit to protect Bombay and the warrior was right next to it now. It's almost 100% as far as I know that a barb will go for the city. Instead, he pillaged a tile - the road I think. I thought for sure that city was lost which would have about ruined my game, but I was trying to get a unit over and he had time to now kill the barb...whew.)

I almost lost my copper city down south in a similar fashion. Some stupid scout got captured next to a road in my city. Fortunately, I was able to get a warrior there in time. I got lucky.

I had a similar game to others, I settled 1E and expanded to 10 cities, including one barb city half way to China. Everybody but Gilga (and an unknown civ) is following judaism, which was founded by Hannibal, and Ram and Gilga are at war likely for that reason. Hannibal is tech leader but indeed quite small, just 5 cities including a former barb city in the jungle near China and Egypt. I went the Music route and built the Great Library and the MoM, I have the GArtist in hand for a GA probably soonish. The Oracle went quite earlyish to Sumeria. CoL is about done, I'll go CS next and then head for knights probably.

8 cities, 50 pop, leading in tech and territory, with some left to backfill. I love playing spiritual leaders because it allows me to try some civics for 5 turns and change my mind. So far all peace, and a Judaic love fest among which I am one. Sumeria is the only hindu, and so he's going to be the one to bribe others to war against to build up diplo points. I think Persia founded Confu and is going that way... but iron/horses/construction allows me to control the game. I expect warring will start soon, but that's sort of an important component of Civilization, so I'm looking forward to it. Fast workers are great, btw. So great, I actually have hit the golden ratio of 1.5+ workers per city. I built Pyramids and Hanging Gardens... and working on Mauseleum of Mausolus (sp?). Currently running Representation, Bureaucracy, Org Rel, and slavery civics. Probably will go to Police state any time now.

Soon I will kill them all. We have clean OPSEC here, don't we? LOL what a rolling on the floor moment.

I've finally reached 1 AD and found this was a relatively tough map.
I probably made some questionable choices along the way, which didn't make my life easier.
Welcome to the club!!!:borg:
