How useful was your wolf?

I took the Monarch save and settled in place. At 1 AD I have 7 cities (with a settler on his way to a second island city) and 47 pop--pretty good for me but I expect somebody will have at least 80 pops. Got the Oracle in 850 for Monarchy and badly needed HR happiness, then GLH in 225. I'll have Currency in two turns and am prepping cats and axes for an attack on the Mayans. Pretty decent land, but boy, that's a lot of jungle up north--gotta have those gems and other happiness resources, though. Letting Hannibal settle and clear those areas for me before capturing them is clever, yes, and not at all an indication that I'm too slow on expansion. Not sure what I'm aiming for, or if I'll even finish. With the challenge of conquering this size map, I may go for Space. Dikes, with the extra hammer for any water/river tile, are pretty sweet for that. Thanks for the game, MG. :)

Contender save. The wolf certainly was useful for scouting, too bad it couldn't pick up the goody huts though, so it felt a bit painful when known huts were picked up by our rivals. However, I did get mining, writing and some cash from them. And some angry villagers who killed my warrior. I settled in place like I'm pretty sure nearly everyone will do. I started on the Great Wall after the first settler and ended up building a few more wonders. being Pyramids, Great Lighthouse and Oracle for Civil Service. As I have the possibly questionable habit of never building cottages on non-riverside tiles, I decided to move my palace already before 1AD to Utrecht, which is to the north at the flood plains, and which was the main source of commerce already anyway. When I was at 8 cities I decided to expand further by force, so I assembled an axe army for Pacal, as I thought horses might not fare as well against the holkans. I've capture Mutal and Lakamha and his last stronghold shouldn't take long to fall from here. Calendar and iron working (self teched for a change) are in, so the plantation and gems resources should come online soon enough for a better happy cap, that was at least manageable with the mids. Right now 10 cities with decent pop, 60. I guess I could've expanded more had I not been busy with wonders and the new palace, but didn't want to do it too crazily either, in order to keep tech at a decent pace. My exploring work boat didn't find a way to the other continent due east, so it circumvented our own continent and went west finding Darius so far. I'll probably go for space too, as the map, big as it is, looks quite nice for it. :)

Contender.
8 cities
46 pop
172b -64g @100%
Starting CS, w/ Calendar, MW, IW, Constr, Currency, COL
Built GLH
Huts: maps, maps, maps, pennies, villagers (died)
Wolf died to a lion

Enjoying this game so far. Probably should have done some more warring earlier. I captured one city from Hannibal and then he captured my spices City near the stone. That’s why I rage-built construction. So I can beat the living bejesus out of him.

My exploring work boat was also unsuccessful to the east so it tried west and has met Darius and Elizabeth. Darius built Stonehenge and the Great Wall. Someone else built the Oracle in 275 BC. I don’t even have mysticism yet. Or alphabet for that matter. Just call me Shaka.

Early on I thought about moving my capital but I haven’t yet. Probably won’t I would imagine.

Hey there, found my way back here.
Noticed Willem on Noble was on with a strong productive start, what more could you want to get overwhelmingly strong, liking it and got it rolling.:)

City/Pop count similar to @nocho , 11/66, tiny bit more because of lesser wonders I guess, only GLH and Oracle.
Happiness was by far the most pressing issue a long time. I went Monotheism to found Tao and put some priority on Calender to solve it. Later on Monarchy=>HR was added.
Maintenance is futile, so freely expanding all the time. Raging barbs are futile, I did manage to get a city razed 3T after founding, by the only axe ever that showed up (besides 2 spears, much was headed for my neighbours). That's what you get from being too easy cruising.
5T from getting Guilds, planning to conquer with knights (350bpt at -100 or 200 bpt at break even).
Also thinking of going Space, you want to see the dikes at work right? So that will be a nice competittion .....

Contender save, SIP.
I was able to expand peacefully. 13 cities, 57pop, with 2 settlers in a galley on their way to found island cities.
My westward workboat was sunk by a barb galley, so no overseas contact yet.
Built TGW, Oracle (Currency), GLH and a shrine for the only religion in our continent (1st to CoL).
Not doing great tech wise but I suppose I will join the friendly space race competition anyways. :)

Contender, SIP.
15 cities / 62 pop @ 1AD. Tech up to CS/Calendar/Monarchy.
Took the Mayan capital early on with a bunch of chariots. Had some barb issues and lost four chariots to wandering spears. Have been at war with Hannibal for most of the game without taking any cities because he has a few highly promoted archers defending and I needed all my units to keep my cities defended and happy. Built TGL and Oracle (CS). No overseas contacts.

Contender, SIP.
9 cities / 37 pop + 1 settler
Oracle for Civil Service
133 beakers and -73 gold at 100% slider; 40 beakers at break even
I prioritized exploration and have met Mansa and Darius so far. I've lost 2 galleys and an exploring WB to barb galleys.
I attacked Pacal early with chariots and lost 3 85% battles in a row in his capital so I ended up leaving him alone for now. He has 3 cities that I will be taking shortly.
I have a lot of hammers into the Pyramids in multiple cities and am getting close to finishing the GLH and Moai.
I haven't played Civ since the last SGOTM so I'm having to relearn everything. ;)
