BOTM 80: Sabella - Can You Beat Germany?

Can you beat a team that scores an extraordinary 7 goals in one game? Can you give Scolari the satisfaction of seeing German Civilizations crumble? In this game you play as Alejandro Sabella of Team Argentina, playing against 7 - shall we say, Germanic - AIs: One for each goal they scored in the semi-final. Obviously, you start at war against Joachim Löw's team, but perhaps you can manage friendlier relations with some of the other 'Germans'. Seeing as you are in charge of a football team, you'll want some fast-moving players (aka chariots), so you start with three of them, all on the same tile. Use them wisely! And don't think I'm giving you an unfair advantage - all the AIs - including Joachim Löw - have three chariots in addition to their normal starting units too! All must be fair in the beautiful game...

Oh, and there's one other twist. Most of the leaders are not leading their usual civilizations. Will you be able to figure out how I chose them? A mention to whoever first gets it right in the spoilers.

As a sub-competition, there'll also be a mention to whoever completely eliminates Jorchen Löw's team on the earliest in-game date - this will be based on what you report in the spoilers, so you won't get the mention unless you report it. (Note however that eliminating Jorchen Löw's team is not a precondition for winning an award.

The Financial trait gives +1 commerce on any plot that already has at least 2 commerce

The Quechua benefits from: free promotions: combat1, and 100% combat bonus against archer units. This compares with the Warrior which has: no directly comparable benefits.

Software Versions

Windows: This game MUST be played in Beyond the Sword (NOT Civ4 Vanilla or Warlords), patched to version 3.19, and with the BUFFY mod version 3.19.003 installed. You can download the BUFFY mod here. Players using Windows Vista or Windows 7 are encouraged to read the notes on Vista fixes here.

Macintosh: This game MUST be played in Beyond the Sword (NOT Civ4 Vanilla or Warlords), patched to version 3.19, and with the Mac BUFFY mod version 3.19.003 installed. You can download the Mac BUFFY mod here.

While playing...

Remember - for your entry to be accepted, it MUST be your first attempt to play this game, and you MUST NOT replay any turns. If you make a mistake while playing, you have to live with it, learn from it, and carry on the game without replaying.

We will open 'spoiler' threads during the month for players to discuss what happens in their games. Do not discuss any details of your game outside those threads.

And remember, if you're thinking of automating any workers, you're playing Argentina. You should win this by hand. :p

Need to move all the chariots before deciding on settling location. Almost anywhere looks better than in-place.
NW looks good for food and production.
NE looks good for 3 food capital and stone.
2N looks good for fresh water, food, production and no ocean.

South of stone is all jungle, right? Stone itself looks like desert... IF so, from what is visible, I would probably go 2N, but as you say, the chariots will reveal so much more information than guessing at this point is nearly pointless.

I'm sure many will have fun with this, but not my cup of tea. It seems like there have been many "gimmick" games in last year or two, and my interest in/time for Civ4 infrequently corresponds with a BOTM configuration & level I'd want to play. Hoping next month (Immortal, right?) it will happen again.

Just as we vary Civs, Maps, and Difficulty Level, we vary "gimmick" and "natural" games.
After all this time, unaltered games seem stale and old fashioned and map makers like to be creative.

What settings are your cup of tea?

OK, understood. I haven't been playing Civ4 continuously, took a couple years break from playing at all & now play maybe only a few games a year. So the standard games don't feel "stale" to me as they do to most of the rest of you. I acknowledge that no I'm not the kind of player that GOTMs target now, it's the ones that have kept playing every month, so please disregard my comment, I should have just kept the thought to myself (and I made a poor choice of words with "gimmick, I apologize).

Have fun with this one, everyone!

@MarkM, no apology necessary
I don't think it came across well, but when I asked "What settings are your cup of tea?" I was sincerely interested in how to make a game that you would like to play.

Great idea! Thank you Dynamicspirit.

It's a pity that one month's football carnival is over, so it's fantistic to cocktail two of my favorites.
I can't help playing this game.

The map type says football field. Anyone else think the line of desert tiles is the white lines on the football field? I guess that we are near the halfway line, so the middle of the map, maybe towards the South since it looks like there may be water even further South (well South-West at least). Now I just need to figure out how that could help me play...

I'm interested to see what the AI does with the Chariots. Will they scout with them? If they do we could try the Incan Rush, but I have a feeling that map makers have some sort of control over the settings of the troops and they might be programmed to defend against the rush.

What are the conditions that AIs need to meet before declaring war?
Would possession of he chariots meet them?

No apology necessary :) The GOTMs are intended for anyone who enjoys playing Civ and wants to participate in competitions, so feedback on what people enjoy is always welcome. Otherwise we'd have no way of knowing (other than by watching how many people submit!) what people like.

Yes, we are able to control the settings of the AI's starting units (not their detailed behaviour, but their overall initial tasks, like City defence, exploring, etc.)

lol... playing as Argentina vs Germany? But Argentina lost. Can I play as Germany in next GOTM?
