Okay, Ding-dang it, this is plain ridiculous.

I used to think that Montezuma was a real pain in the backside, but he's got nothing on the new alternate celtic leader Boudica or whatever her name is. This crazy *rhymes with witch* has attacked me at least three times without any real reason. It wouldn't be so annoying except all of her troops seem to have insane promotions.

That or the Sumerian UU (Vulture) sucks eggs. I'm willing to give the vulture a break since its the first time i've played the sumerians. I had a lot of them built too, since the closest horse resource for me took awhile to get hooked up. Its obviuos that she isn't going to stop declaring war every five minutes and it would take the rest of the game to destroy her so I might throw in the towel on this one. But now I know....if I EVER see that whack job in another game she's got to go. At least Montezuma would be amusingly nuts. She's just irritating.

If:

Im pretty sure this was terribly wrong, so here it is in plain text:

If you look weak enough to be attacked, you gonna get it.
If you saw a Civ with only 1 archer in every city along the coast, wouldnt you send your macemen to steamroll them?

The AI does so too now.
I had Stalin land on my island with 4 swordsmen, since i had 5 cities and a total of 2 warriors.
I was basically begging to be invaded.

So how was your military strength at the time she decided to pay you a visit?

They only really ever attack if you are seriously weak, or went looking for a fight.

Honestly, I can't believe the new Sumerian Vulture sucks. I even thought it was overpowered at one point.

I had a series of bad experiences with Boudicca in my first game, but these were easily rectified by sending in hordes of soldiers to dispatch the Iceni woman. :)

I don't know if I agree or not - I just couldn't resist posting on a thread with this title. :)

My vultures beat back Julius Caesar's invading praetorians. Julius never bothered me again. I think they are a fantastic unit for defence.

Boudica hit the border state between our respective nations three times (on the second and third I joined the war and recaptured some of my ally's cities for him). Boudica is a much more dangerous version of Montezuma because her troops are far superior (you can't beat Agg/Cha, you just can't), and the AI is good at capturing cities.

I was thinking of playing one round with Boudica, Shaka, and Montezuma on the map and seeing what would happen with Aggressive AI turned on. My guess is six millenia of war.

In BTS, the AI leaders build up much larger armies, so you'll need to keep strong defenses to deter attacks from them. Boudica isn't as crazy as Monty, Ragnar, or Isabella when it come to suicidal aggression, however. Get on her good side and give her a target (a shared foe) and she'll love you forever.

Boudica(?) has nice assets.

She looks too much like my high school english teacher. Its disturbing.

I don't know how to get on her good side. She went from pleased to nutso very early in the game. I know she fought a few times with Hannibal but that doesn't account for the crazy amount of promotions her troops had. Honestly, I didn't stand a chance, though I tried. She bulldozed right over me. Her gallic warriors ate my knights and vultures like corn flakes.

She seems to very much respect military might. I've had several games with her as a neighbour at monarch/emperor, and as long as I'm around equal militarily to her, she won't declare war, even if my border with her is manned by just warriors

Hmmmm....so I guess the answer would be to crush her fast before she has gallics, or build an enormous army since most of 'em will end up getting a celtic blade shoved where the sun don't shine.:p

Try to slip a few ninja units in quick to cut her off from necessary resources. I fought her early, but not early enough to avoid the Gallic swords, pillaging the necessary resource for building them bought me enough time to get ahead.

Funny... I have played several games with Boudica and never once gone to war with her (probably before I'm typically the most powerful nation and, if I check the "power" graph and I'm not I soon will be!).

Now guys like Genghis Khan and Montezuma are a different case altogether. They don't seem to give a rat's rip whether or not you are stronger than they are. I think that they have some serious mental issues in the new Beyond the Sword version (like being suicidal).

If course, if you don't like wars you can always go back to Warlord or the standard version. I could go for weeks in those versions and never see war. Now practically every game someone is attacking someone else...

Wouldn't standard axemen have been statistically superior in that scenario?

No, actually. If you take the base units against melee troops:

Axemen: 5 + 50% = 7.5
Vulture: 6 + 25% = 7.5

However, the combat promotions build on a base strength of 6, not 5...so if you have Combat I on the units, fighting melee:

Axemen: 5 + 60% = 8.0
Vulture: 6 + 35% = 8.1

The difference is even more pronounced with the Shock promotion:

Axemen: 5 + 85% = 9.25
Vulture: 6 + 60% = 9.6

Therefore, the Vulture is slightly favored, but not by a wide margin.
