There are too many things to consider when trying to rush or not. But earlier is better. In an average capital I'd chop/slave a barracks and 4 bowmen and then go on adventure with these bowmen stacked together, or at least in such a way that if the enemy sees a bowman, he sees 4 bowmen. It is a nice unit. Don't expect to win at once though, be happy if you can pillage and lock him down into building only archers. Then go make some catapults when you can
