boxed game - playing without dvd

Could people confirm if you can play the dvd version of the game without the dvd in (i.e. just using your steam logging in).

I'm sorry if this has already been posted but my connection or the website keeps playing up when using the search engine.

I want to get the boxed game as:
- its cheaper
- I can install it easily
- it may be as a birthday present and it's harder to unwrap steam

But if its easier in the long run I will go with the downloaded version.

yes any game you register with steam can be played without the disk. That is assuming it is available in the steam store or uses Steamworks (like ciV does).
