Well you don't have to think hard to figure what will happen:

The Brazilian government is investigating the case of a 15-year-old girl who allegedly was raped and tortured after being put in a prison cell with 20 male inmates, officials said.

The girl -- who said she was forced to have sex for food and suffered burns and other abuse -- has denounced police in the small town of Abaetetuba for keeping her in the cell.

If every country had a law system like one in US, they all would be better off.

If we had just killed the 20 men this wouldn't have happened.

Or killed the girl.

Man, the backlash generated by this is big! And I know, not only because I'm Brazilian, but because I'm from Belém and both Belém and Abaetetuba are in the state of Pará!

And they've found even MORE women in cells along a lot of men! It's getting a good media coverage here!

You're from Belém? I didn't know you guys had computers up there! :p ;) (j/k)

Anyway, jails in the brazilian Southeast are a bloody mess. Prisons in the brazilian North (like this one) and Northeast are probably not very far from the worst thing a sane person can imagine.

Bottom line is we need many, many more jailhouses...

Brazilians really must be a sandwich short of a picnic. What did they expect would happen if you put a 15 year old girl (criminal or not) with 20 men in the same cell?

That they would play "hopscotch" and have socio-political discussions over the cell table?

For goodness sake, have some intelligence, stupid country.

Like the inmates in Guantanamo Bay, who after being detained for several years haven't been given a trial?

No, thanks

I'll stick with British Law and the International Court if you don't mind. :)

Who says it has anything to do with ignorance? While many police officers (anywhere) are probably good intentioned and benevolent, it is a position of power that greatly enables those who are bad intentioned and malevolent. Odds are, the cops just don't care... or worse, they enjoy abusing their power in such a fashion. And while abuse of power can happen in any police force or correctional system, I get the impression that Brazil would FAR worse than say, Norway.

Yeah, we have computers. And mine kicks ass. :p ;)

You know what? I'm very feed up latelly. "X was killed yesterday. Bandits robbed some John Doe somewhere, bandits blablablabla murder blablablabla Beira-Mar blablabla."

This ENTIRE COUNTRY is a fu****g bloody mess. Yeah, prisons are bad here, but then again, find me a GOOD prison in the world and I'll give you a cookie!

No, we don't need MORE jailhouses. ENOUGH IS ENOUGH. We need MORE DEAD BANDITS WITH BULLETS ON THE HEAD. Why should WE, honest citizens, pay for a lot of trouble-making scum that's never going to rehabilitate when someone can just put a BULLET right into their HEADS?! I say we ONLY aprision petty criminals. Anyone involved with traffic and heavy stuff should go to the BIG PRISION IN THE SKY. ENOUGH WITH ALL THIS "BANDITS ARE THE VICTIMS ****S*T." I'm a honest Brazilian citizen and I'M ******* TIRED OF BEING SCARED AND SUSTAINING LEECHES!! OFF WITH 'EM!!' DEATH TO 'EM!!! I WANNA SEE THEIR DEAD HEADS ON BLOODY STICKS AFTER SUFFERING HORRIBLE, PAINFUL DEATHS!!!

Ok... now I AM calm... I needeed to get that steam off...

Enemy Combatants don't have constitutional rights. You don't read miranda rights to people on a battlefield. You try and kill them.

I suddenly want to goto a prison in Brazil.

But only for an hour, like Lindsy Lohan.

Wrong enemy combatants do have right its illegal enemy combatants that don't have right[or so thats what the american's think!]! (2 people were tagged as enemy combatants and they could not be tried until they were changed to illegal enemy combatants!)

Eh, you think it is legal to put a 15 year old girl in a cell with 20 men in Brazil? The problem is we are talking about a country where laws are not always taken seriously, and specifically a region where the law is seldom taken seriously.

I don't know where you are from, but I would gladly bet that brazilian law is far more benevolent with criminals than the laws of your country. In fact this benevolence is part of the problem, since there is a philosophy that instead of spending money with jails we should spend money on social programs that would supposedely prevent crime (nevermind the fact that more people are murdered each year in Brazil than in Iraq, some 60 years after the stablishment of the nanny state).

Either way, they don't have a right to a trial. You don't have trials for people during war. Were people complaining about not giving the Nazi's trials during WWII?

Clumping Gitmo into non-war related civilian prisons in America is just patently absurd.

The people at Gitmo, per the Geneva Convention, do not have a right to a timely trial.
