Brazil presidential candidate dies in plane crash

SAO PAULO

Brazilian presidential candidate Eduardo Campos died Wednesday when the small plane that was carrying him and several campaign officials plunged into a residential neighborhood in the port city of Santos, a City Hall official there said.

All seven people aboard the plane, including a campaign photographer and cameraman, a press advisor, as well as two pilots, died in the crash, City Hall press officer Patricia Fagueiro told The Associated Press.
I do admit I know nothing of this man, but condolences to all who are affected by this loss.

Will his death make the re-election of the worker's party a lock now?

That's really unfortunate, and given this happened in the middle of a presidential campaign it is going to spawn all kinds of conspiracy theories.

From the article, it seems that Marina Silva is the most likely candidate to take his place on the ballot.

The article kind is kind of contradictory there, actually. I am curious as to why she was prevented from running.
...thanks largely to his running mate, the popular former Environment Minister Marina Silva, who joined Campos after she was prevented from running herself.

Silva's press adviser said that she was on the way to Santos, but it was not immediately clear whether she would assume Campos' spot as the party's presidential candidate.

EDIT: Oh, okay, it looks like that was about her previous party affiliation, which their Supreme Court disallowed. So I guess it's okay for her to run as this party's candidate. At least that's how I interpret this...

On 16 February 2013 it was officially launched in Brasilia a new party that was named "Rede Sustentabilidade" (Sustainability Network).[35] According to the founders of the party, the word that will be used at the polls will be only "Rede" (Network).[36] The former Senator does not rule out running for President again in the 2014 presidential elections.[37]

In 4 October 2013, the Supreme Electoral Court blocked the party's creation, due to the lack of necessary signatures to register it.[38] The following day, Marina announced her affiliation to Brazilian Socialist Party[39]

Leftwing Latin American politicians have bad fortunes with small planes.

Silva had better polling numbers vs Rousseff than Campos iirc, so it would be weird if this was foul play.
