Brazilian Soccer Team Killed in Plane Crash

It's horrible...They just reached the Copa Sudamericana finals a few days ago...Really tragic to say the least...

It sounds like they had just barely enough fuel to make it, but were then forced into a holding pattern because the runway wasn't ready, and ran out of fuel while in the holding pattern. The rather unhurried response from air traffic control to the pilot's frantic attempts to tell him they were out of fuel and going down indicates that they still didn't appreciate the severity of the situation. This will definitely count as a "human error/organizational issue".

Really sad. The Sulamericana final was certainly the greatest achievement of this small but brave team - what a way to shatter a dream. People were very sad throughout the country, and the homage that Atletico Nacional, the Colombian adversary of Chapecoense, performed following the tragedy was quite moving.

The team they were supposed to play in the final requested that CONMEBOL (The football association governing South Amerca) award the win to Chapecoense.

They announced today that this is going to happen. Classy move and good on CONMEBOL to agree to it

This hasn't been announced yet officially, for these reasons:

Chapecoense will be declared champions of the 2016 Copa Sudamericana. Conmebol has already made its decision, but does not announce it for two reasons.

1) It does not want to treat the matter publicly because it considers it is not the proper moment to deal with sporting or administrative issues;

2) It needs to solve the necessary paperwork in order to submit the decision to Conmebol’s Council (the former Executive Committee), which will only meet again on December, 21.

Sources heard by GloboEsporte.com in Conmebol, CBF and FIFA believe there won’t be any opposition to the idea [of awarding Chapecoense the title], hence they see it as a consolidated fact.

This way, Chapecoense has a spot in next year’s Copa Libertadores’ group stage as well as a place in Recopa’s final – a title it will play for against Atlético Nacional.

This is coming through completely non-official sources, but it seems like it's going to happen.

Ronaldinho and Riquelme have also announced that they will come out of retirement and play for Chapecoense, and I think I saw Ronaldinho saying that he will do so without taking on a salary.

They are a bit old now, but they are huge stars, and should help the club transition in this difficult time, while they find replacement players and so on.

There are many measures being considered to help the chapecoense:

- several teans announced they will lend players free of charge next year;

- there is talk of cancelling the last round of the Brazilian championship. This is a though call because there are teams still fighting to access the "Libertadores cup", or flee from the "descent zone" that will force them so play the B series instead of the A series next year. Problem is that at least one team, the Porto Alegre International, a very traditional team in Brazil, is at high risk (about 80%) of falling for the first time in its history, and the club president already hinted he will take matters to court should the chance to escape be taken away.

- there in a movement from professional players, the "common sense football club", trying to organize a massive W.O. with all players of all teams. The idea is that if this comes from the players, not the clubs, there can't be administrative punishment, and if it has 100% commitment, nobody can be punished. Some Internacional's players apparently have agreeded even if it means the descent, but there is little hope that there will be this level of commitment, and this leaves lots of questions on how to handle things as the regulations did not predicted a collective W.O.

- Atlético Mineiro, the team chapecoense would have played in the last round, already announced it won't play the last round. Apparently, even if it means getting punished.

- Teams that do plan to play have been announcing they will play with special uniforms in honor of Chapecoense. I know Flamengo will insert their shield in black on the chest, than those shirts will be auctioned, and the profits will be reverted to them. There are talks of friendly matches next year, with the profits being donated as well, but this latter idea is still in embrio. I expect other teams will have similar initiatives.

- There is a proposal to grant Chapecoense immunity from descent to the B series for up to 3 years in order to reorganize. I doubt the confederation will agree, but still, it's on the table.

Anyways, today chapecoense is everybody's second team in Brazil... and Atlético Nacional from Colombia is the third. They did walk the high road there.
