Bribing troops

I agree, fundamentalism is so powerful, I won't use it, I feel it gives me too much of an advantage - the very idea of removing unhappiness from the game (the crux of succeeding at higher levels) makes it far too easy. I do enjoy smacking around AI civs that have it, considering I am at a disadvantage when I take them on - generally if I am in peace I am in a Republic or Democracy and when I am at war, I use Communism.

It may be more efficient, but its sure is a sissy way to win a game

I don't bride troops, because the amount that you have to pay is almost always ridiculously high.

Fundy really throws off the balance of regimes available (too many pros & not enough cons). I believe that it still has a place in the game, but not in it's current form.

There are plenty of times when it's the cheapest thing to do. If you're taking over cities and don't have the firepower to get rid of the partisans, they're usually cheap to bribe and they can come right back into their old home city and defend it.

Well make the most of it while you can - you won't see it in any other game 'cos it's been taken out of Civ3!

One of my favorite tactics:

Bribe the barbarian horse/ elephant unit (I think 41 gold for the elephant, even cheaper for the horse) and have it reach back and attack the barbarian leader unit that is juuuust out of reach of all your units in your city. You get 150 gold! Now you have a new unit and some extra cash.

Also, have you ever noticed, you NEVER lose in battle with the barbarian leader, no matter how weak your attacking unit is and how difficult the terrain? Its because the barbarian leader is really a diplomat in disguise (who have no defense value). One time, I decided to bribe the whole barbarian army and when I bribed the leader, it cost 61 gold and he turned into a diplomat!

The way I look at it, inciting revolts and bribing units are a documented part of the game. Why not use them? It's not like the Airfield thing which is an "undocumented feature" (as us software developers like to call them...) that makes no sense at all.

I'm sure the Firaxis team will make it much harder to buy the world in civ3 (they've been lurking around sites like this...they know it's out of whack) but until they do, I'll fill my ships with dips and own the world!!!

It can be done, but if an opposing civilization has achieved the Automobile, much less Stealth, they usually will have an economy that will make the price tag for bribing a battleship or stealth bomber prohibitively expensive.

In a recent game, I bribed aprox 10 engineers, 30 marines, 20 armor and 10 howitzers, as well as the entire surface fleet (AEGIS, Battleships, Destroyers etc.) of my various opponents, and then embarked upon bribing their towns. Lovely. Costs abit, but when spread out to a maximum of
15000 a turn, it only takes 3or 4 turns at the utmost to recoup yer losses. Gives democracy a huge free army. Most recommended.

Also, when Leo's Workshop is still working, bribe all the crappy enemy units, like phlanx or warriors- they turn into riflemen, who can be used for forts. Common sense really.

I only bribe Barbarian units because thay are cheaper and You can recoup some of the cost by getting the leader. Also with Partisans beng so bloatedly costly(in shields), you get 25 more shields for your production and some more defensive units without wasting time on building them.
