Subject. From the late 19th through the mid 20th century, enormous conscript armies were a staple of both eastern and western militaries, so much so that even comparatively tiny nations like Serbia, Poland, and Bulgaria would have enormous 500k+ strong armies.

Why was this feature nixed in Civ 5?

We do not need cow clickers;)

It was a poor micro heavy feature.

Rush buy is much better and have more depth to it.

Conscription worked pretty well in Civ IV (perhaps a little overpowered, but they could have fixed that easily), but conscription + 1UPT = no go.

Huge armies are a clickfest and impossible to maneuver.

It should be possible to conscript up to 20% of the city population every 10 tuns (if i think about Civ5 gameplay on slow tempo not marathon). The conscripted unit should be much weaker than the normal melee unit. It could work like a promotion with strength -40% but the conscripted unit could be upgraded to the normal unit for gold. Conscripting also has to increase the unhappiness of the city until the unit is disbanded, what brings back the population point.
