BBC, but only becasue its the only we get here in North America.

When did the British government begin private investment in television? I know they've had it for some time, not sure when they liberalized it, though.

BBC and C4 are the best two channels so I voted for C4 because most people are going to vote for the BBC...I cannot wait to see how many votes C5 and ITv get...

I do like all the classic Beeb comedies and dramatic programs that all to infrequently can be seen on television here.

No no, C5 shows an excellent range of intellectual and interesting programmes which caters for people of all ages. You're just not giving it a chance.

...

...

No, screw it. BBC + C4 are the better two. Ho hum.

I voted channel 4 because they show The West Wing. Also they have great shows such as Fraiser, Friends, ER, Teachers, Enterprise (after Sky One) and of course in 2007 The Simpsons.

The most I get of channel 5 is a bit of fuzzyness and some vague notion of colour.

I voted for the BBc, channel 4 being my second choice. Apart from the odd film and of course the football, I don't really watch ITV that much.

I thought that the Beeb had recently taken ITV1 over in the ratings for the first ever time.

Thats because people who play alot of Civ proabably don't bother watching soaps...ITV is only good for football and some films.

Survey are always subjective. Were any of you asked? I'm sure that if you went around Guildford and asked the same questions about TV you'd find that the vast majority would vote for BBC 1 (apart from a few who have a guilty fondness for Footballers' Wives) but if you went around a housing estate during the day and asked them then people would vote ITV because they cater for people who watch daytime TV far better than the BBC. They offer soaps and rubbishy chat shows. That's exactly what people want. ITV is far too often lowest common denominator TV. I know I sound a snob, but hell, I am one. I miss the documentaries they used to have (no, not the Cook Report), but now you can't watch anything but The Monsters with the Biggest Teeth and Landscape Gardners from Hell! :(

I hate the way that the Beeb seems to want to follow ITV's example in terms of catching up in a ratings war. Personally I'd like to see all 'reality' TV banned from the BBC. I thought about voting for C4, but really there's not much there anymore, though I like Film 4.

Thinking about it, the only TV I really watch is on BBC, Buffy, The Simpsons, Star Trek, documentaries (did anyone see the excellent 'Century of Self'?), the news. But I will watch 4 when the Simpsons and Enterprise move there.

I also HATE commercials.

does the Beeb feel they have to catch up in ratings when they get the TV licence money anyway, so it doesn't matter how many people watch?

Because its a rating and since we are paying for them to broadcast, they want to be as popular as possible.

Their income depends upon the public donations from licence fees. If they were not delivering something to satisfy all of those people who pay the licence fees then they would lose a large amount of money from them. Not through people not paying licence fees, but from the Government deciding that they were not doing a public service and cutting their funding. It is part of their remit to ensure that they cater for all tastes, even those who want to watch Star Trek re-runs.
