I can't believe no one has done this before. :D

THIS WEEKS' CIV:
MYCENAE

What is Civ of the Week?

Civ of the Week is a “project” aiming at bringing you a new, fresh, exotic, and most of all, random, civ every 1-2 weeks, from all corners of the globe, from the Vietnamese to the Mittanni to the Iraqis.
Each civilization features full civilopedia text entires, 1-2 leaders with slightly more unique attitudes (they're not simply a copy of another leader), a UU, a UB, audio, and full graphics.

The purpose of Civ of the Week, then, is two-fold:

1. To bring you random civs that would probably not have been chosen as civilizations first of all, and to provide a new, more exotic, more interesting experience in choosing civilizations.

2. To promote more knowledge of lesser-known peoples, cultures, and histories.

Otherwise, then, enjoy!

Statistics and Information for the Mycenaeans:

Description: The Mycenaeans were one of the civilizations that flourished in the southern Balkans before the coming of Classical Greece, along with the Minoans, the kingdom of Arzawa, and so forth. They flourished in the 1000s BC, before falling into decline.

To the Greeks, the Mycenaeans formed part of their many legends and myths, especially that of the Trojan War. The brother-in-law of Helen, Agamemnon was, after all, the ruler of Mycenae. Whether an actual Trojan War happened is still in dispute amongst scholars, but regardless, the historical Mycenae was a very powerful political entity in its heydey. Unlike the more trade oriented Minoans, the Mycenaeans focused much more on their military. The Mycenaeans had chariots, heavy bronze armor, and a navy, amongst many other things.

It is not exactly clear how the Mycenaeans organized themselves politically, although it is certain that they dominated over parts of mainland Greece, the Aegean Islands, Crete, and possibly areas of Ionia. Several cities are believed to have been politically important, besides Mycenae, including Pylos, Tiryns, and Athens. Whether they were independent of each other or united is not exactly clear.

Although Mycenae was military-oriented, they were also probably decent traders. Mycenaean artifacts have been found throughout Anatolia, Egypt, Italy, and even as far as Germany and the Crimea, for example. The Mycenaeans, similar to the Minoans, also organized themselves around large palaces. There would be different craftsmen and specialists in each certain palace. Nobles, priests, and the king's warriors, or eqeta, would also be there.

The Mycenaeans fell into decline in the 1100s through the 800s BCE. There is not a clear consensus as to why. The most commonly accepted belief is that invaders, possibly Dorian Greeks or the Sea Peoples, came through the area and devastated the civilization. The possibility of a natural disaster, such as a volcano, can not be ruled out either. However they fell, the Mycenaeans dissapeared from history and survived mainly only in the poetry and legends of the later Greeks. Regardless, as precursors to the Greeks, they nevertheless serve an important part in history.

Leader: Agamemnon (Org, Pro)

UU: Eqeta (replaces Warrior) +1 strength, slightly cheaper

UB: Tholoi (replaces Monument) -20% maintaince cost in cities

Note: the LH has eyes that are a bit... off/cartoony (he looks a bit insane), but I think that adds to the effect he has. And its just plain hilarious. Of course, if you know some Greek mythology, you'd probably think his slightly psycho look would work better for someone else in his family.

And I still can't believe no one has done this before.

Is that Gilgamesh with new animations? Whose are they?

I need to remind one of the big LH makers to use them. They could be used to great effect with another LH.

Thanks for the compliments!

Yes, the LH is Gilgamesh. I was playing around with different leaders' animations when I came across Suleiman's. Gilgamesh looks just hilariously psychotic with Suleiman's animations - although it may look cartoony, of course, but that's just personal taste. I think it looks hilariously great.

The only small issue, if we could consider it one, is that the new Gilgamesh's eyes are always in the same position. What I mean is that his left eye will always be lower, and his right eye higher, so he always looks pyscho the same manner, essentially. It's not that big of a deal of course, and if you have no idea what I just said, even better.

Thanks for the compliments again (i had tons of fun just watching the LH look like a psycho)! :D

Actually, you know, he looks so hilariously insane that I actually feel sorry for him.

I wonder, is there any psychotic leader who could based off Gilgamesh?

(slightly long, but read it anyhow!)

I think in general any Middle Eastern or eastern Mediteranean (i.e. around Greece) leader during the Ancient or Classical Age could be represented by Gilgamesh. Of course, the only problem is that its harder to know the actual personalities of guys around this time...

But as I said, several of Agamemnon's family were kind of ****oo (there's like an entire curse or something behind it), so that could always work.

I think maybe Sargon of Akkad could also work, even though there is nothing historical to prove that he was actually psychotic. But, I mean, as the first empire-builder in the world... I dunno... maybe it does require some out-of-the-box thinking...

Actually, I just remembered that it is possible to remove Gilgamesh's beard. I believe it was Esnaz who accomplished this. See the following link, sixth row down: see the thread here.

I'm surprised not many have used this beard-less Gilgamesh to make LHs. Anyhow, combine the beard-less Gilgamesh with the psycho animations, and I think it's pretty much possible to do any random psycho leader from Classical through Modern times. You could even mix and match with new beards or add-ons, I guess.

With that, I'm not sure what psychotic leaders could work, really. Perhaps if a beard is added a new Tamerlame could be made, that's the first choice that came to mind. Vlad the Impaler was pretty bloody too, there could be a different version of him (though the Justinian version is pretty good anyhow). Probably a number of African and Latin American dictators of recent times could be made, too.

Amazing... a whole new world of psychotic possibilities...

A lot of LHs are based on a bearless Gilgamesh; Attila the Hun, Schwartzenegger, Michael Collins...

Really? Guess I'm not too good at recognizing drastically-changed LHs. Anyhow, still, now we have a whole new world of possibilities to psychotic LHs...

Hi!
I have 2 questions:
1.) How can i combine this with the Rise of Mankind mod ( is it just that i extract it to Rom folder?)
2.) How can i modify traits? I have downloaded a trait and i want to change it. Just tell me the location where the traits are and i will experiment from then on.

Hello, JanK!

To answer your questions:

1. No, I'm afraid you can't simply drop this into the RoM folder. I am not sure whether RoM is modular or not, but regardless, my work is never modular (it's habit, I suppose), so its not really possible to simply drop it in. If you want it to combine it with other mods, then you'd have to do it the hard way, unfortunately - which is basically copying and pasting the XML, art, and diplomusic from my thing into the XML, art, etc. from the other thing.

2. Modifying traits is probably a bit easier I think, because my thing does not deal with traits. The traitinfos.xml is located in the Assets/XML/Civilizations folder. To change Leaderhead traits, you go to the leaderheadinfos.xml in the same folder, and change a few lines in that file.

Of course, I would advise you look up some of the excellent tutorials in the Tutorial forum, for although they may not answer your questions directly, they may be able to give you insight into certain files or techniques of modding and playing around with all these files.

I suppose that was a bit confusing, and if it was, let's hope someone else can help me explain! Otherwise, I hope you good luck with whatever you're doing.

RoM has unique settings for just about everything so civs made in modular format won't work in RoM unless many of the civ, UU, UB, leader settings have been converted to those in RoM.

On a bright side, I've converted bunch of modular civs to RoM and there's Mycenae among them though probably not the same version as in this thread. :)

Hey Cybrxkhan you should make a Trojan/Illian Civ, that'd be great! Some other great civs might be Olmec, or the Hittites.
