BtS Installation Problem

I run the BtS installation, and it says it's searching for updates. It says it found an update for Civ 4, and is installing it. Then it says "The patch failed to install! Aborting installation." I uninstalled Civ 4 and BtS because I had a patch on it that was interfering with a mod I downloaded, and now this happens. Please help.

Figured out the problem! (Took me all damn day). When I uninstalled Civ 4, I uninstalled it's patches as well (obviously). So when I tried to reinstall BtS, it searched for updates for Civ 4 vanilla, and it found the latest one. However, the latest one won't work if the first patch isn't installed. This was the problem. So I downloaded and installed the first patch, and BtS was able to install the second. I hope this will be a good thread for people who may have the same problem.

hey thanks man. i thought i just needed to download a new patch
anyway now things should work

Thank you thank you thank you!

I was /this/ close to packing the game back up and trying to return it because of that exact problem. Thank you for this post, it saved the day! :D

I have the same probelm, except I was installing it off of civ gold, so i cant download the first patch

I've been having a lot of problems with my BtS so I figured I'd do what everyone seems to do, re-install and try again. When I do I get this.

Feature Transfer Error
Component: Warlords Component
File: E:\data2.cab
Error: Cyclic Redundancy check

So I uninstalled Warlords, reinstalled, patched with the up to date Warlords patch and then tried again. Same problem.

I already have PTSD from combat; I can't take this . .. .. .. . as well.

UPDATE: I uninstalled Civ 4, patched to Final, uninstalled Warlords, patched to Final and I still get this error. I get it at the same place too.

C:\Civ4\BTS/Assets\Art\Movies\Intros\BTSIntroFinal.bik and then I get the above error and CtD.

the crc error points to a defective disc...
have you tried cpying the files to your harddrive and run the installer from there? if this error occurs during copying its the disc.

I tried it, got the same error, spent about 2 minutes buffing my disc and it seems to be working as I've gotten past the original error point.

That does bring up a question I have; is there a way to run these games without a CD at all? I ask because you can't get Alpha Centauri/Alien Crossfire any more and a buddy of mine as AC but not the expansion. He's going to Iraq soon (for the 2nd time along with a tour in Afghanistan) and I'd like to gift him a copy of it. However, since I haven't been able to copy it, I was wondering if there is anyway to run it from files copied onto the system. I want to know this for myself since those CD's aren't getting any younger and I still play that game.

circumventing the copy protection system is against forum rules - so there won't be help there. If you want to gift a genuine copy without a disc:
both steam and direct2drive sell copies that are purely digital. In case of someone with only irregular internet access d2d is probably better since steam tries to call home all the time...
Don't try buying download versions from other vendors - only steam and d2d have a good record of providing all patches for this game online - the ones for the cd version don't work so this is necessary :)

Normally I wouldn't even ask, and it was a standing joke that between me an many of my younger fellow soldiers over the issue of copy-rights. The younger set seems to have no compulsion what so ever about not downloading illegal stuff. Since (when I was active duty) it was my job to monitor and delete this sort of stuff off of Army computers, I had a different view.

However, in this case, I was going to make an exception simply because EA seems it isn't worthwhile to make AC/AC available. I would MUCH prefer a real copy for my buddy an me. So I will definitely look this up and try it out. Luckily my buddy is a intel guy like me so he'll generally be at a base with some decent internet, especially since he's going to Iraq and not back to Afghanistan where internet was always a bit spotty.

I am having a similar problem. I just got a a new comp (vista 64-bit OS) and it meets all the requirements. Civ 4 installs just fine as do all the updates to it. (I had to dl the ones before 1.74 b/c for some reason the game only recognized that expantion. I tried to dl it in game and it said it couldnt do it, but after i dl the previous expansions and run the updater in game, it works just fine.)

Anyway as I try to install BtS, it runs fine until I get to the actual installation part. It says it's checking DirectX and updating as necessary. After like 20 seconds the whole thing crashes...I have tried to install BtS multiple times. I even tried uninstalling original Civ 4 and reinstalling it then BtS with the same results. Can anyone help me?

Okay so i followed what you guys did above...i let BtS installer update Civ 4 to the latest patch(1.74) after i manually installed the earlier patches, i didnt do it in game. It works somehow.

Basically you cant have your Civ 4 up to date (only up to 1.61) when you want to install BtS on Vista....WTH lol.

This is the same error message I was getting. Does this mean my CD is screwed up? Pleased explain "buffing." Do you mean cleaned or something else?

I don't understand.I'm having the same problem, but my civ IV vanilla is unpatched... And I can't patch it, the setup says that it "has detected that version 1.09.000 of Sid Meier's Civ 4 is already installed... This setup is not compatible with this version. You will have to uninstall the previous version before installing this version".

WTH?
:(

I'm having a similar problem as the original poster (BTS won't install on a fully updated and patched Civ IV vanilla).
However, I did not install Civ IV with a disc, but downloaded from d2d, and can't find the program files anywhere on my computer (using Vista). Is it possible to downgrade a d2d Civ IV game? and if so, where can I find the program files?

EDIT- I did find the game files, but not the program files. Only the following folders are present under "C:\Users\<Name>\Documents\My Games\Sid Meier's Civilization 4":
- Custom Assets
- Logs
- MODS
- Patch
- PublicMaps
- Replays
- Saves
- ScreenShots
- TransferredMaps
- CivilizationIV.ini
- CivilizationIV.ini.bak

There aren't any actual program files, just user settings/saves/etc. and there's nothing in the "Patches" folder.
