This deserves something of a backstory that may or may not help:
I got a Civilization IV for my birthday, played it, and uninstalled it because other stuff comes up. Fast forward a month later, and I want to play it again. So I install it, or try to, and get a ton of errors coming my way during installation. I google everything, and was pretty much told that I had some dumb problem that can't be fixed. I shrug my shoulders, and go back to messing around in AoE and such. The game was technically "installed" though, to be fair, the installation quit halfway through due to cyclic redudancy errors.
Last week, I get a couple of bucks off a bet, and buy a Civilization IV (Gold edition) and Warlords Expansion. I order them Factory Sealed so that cyclic redundancy errors (supposedly caused by scratches on the disk) don't make themselves known again.
Beyond the Sword gets there first, so I try to install it. It doesn't work. I shrug, and assume it's because I have the other Civilization IV on there. I leave it all be until Gold Edition comes.
I install Gold without a hitch, and decide that Beyond the Sword may as well be installed too. So I try to install it, and it a message pops up saying something along the lines of
"A new version of Sid Meier's Civilization IV is out. Preparing to patch." A minute later, I get "The patch failed to install! Aborting Installation"
I have googled, and searched your fine forums, and the only other case I could find of this happening was resolved when the fellow downloaded the 1/74 patch, and patched it manually.
I downloaded the patch, and it refused to acknowledge Civ IV was installed. Furthermore, the patching features in the game under "updates" says that there are no newer versions or patches.
So, I am at a loss. I have re-installed Gold Version multiple times. I have un-installed Gold Version, and deleted everything off my computer that even remotely looked like it had anything to do with Civilization. I have Virus Scanned (Spybot S&D, AVG). I have defragged (I don't think this will do much, but worth a shot...), I have sacrificed a goat, and howled to my pagan gods for deliverance. I have downloaded the patch a thousand times, each from a different site, and none of them seem to work. I have downloaded the BtS patch. Surprisingly enough, it didn't do anything.
tl;dr-BTS won't install due to patch error. Patch can't be installed. Halp?
Details:
-Installed Gold Version (Civilization IV and Warlords expansion combined)
-Under the impression that Gold Version is patched to Version 1.74
-My computer meets/exceeds the min. requirements (details can be provided upon this if requested)
-The DirectX is also of the latest version.
-No scratches on any of the CDs.
-Gold Edition works fine, and the computer itself acknowledges it is there (i.e-shows up in add/remove programs; When disc put in tray, everything starts up)
-These are legit CDs. Nor did I install anything such as No-CD cracks, or anything else third party that may have mucked around with anything.
So, any help? I hear Beyond the Sword is supposed to be pretty awesome, and I want in.
