This deserves something of a backstory that may or may not help:

I got a Civilization IV for my birthday, played it, and uninstalled it because other stuff comes up. Fast forward a month later, and I want to play it again. So I install it, or try to, and get a ton of errors coming my way during installation. I google everything, and was pretty much told that I had some dumb problem that can't be fixed. I shrug my shoulders, and go back to messing around in AoE and such. The game was technically "installed" though, to be fair, the installation quit halfway through due to cyclic redudancy errors.

Last week, I get a couple of bucks off a bet, and buy a Civilization IV (Gold edition) and Warlords Expansion. I order them Factory Sealed so that cyclic redundancy errors (supposedly caused by scratches on the disk) don't make themselves known again.

Beyond the Sword gets there first, so I try to install it. It doesn't work. I shrug, and assume it's because I have the other Civilization IV on there. I leave it all be until Gold Edition comes.

I install Gold without a hitch, and decide that Beyond the Sword may as well be installed too. So I try to install it, and it a message pops up saying something along the lines of
"A new version of Sid Meier's Civilization IV is out. Preparing to patch." A minute later, I get "The patch failed to install! Aborting Installation"

I have googled, and searched your fine forums, and the only other case I could find of this happening was resolved when the fellow downloaded the 1/74 patch, and patched it manually.

I downloaded the patch, and it refused to acknowledge Civ IV was installed. Furthermore, the patching features in the game under "updates" says that there are no newer versions or patches.

So, I am at a loss. I have re-installed Gold Version multiple times. I have un-installed Gold Version, and deleted everything off my computer that even remotely looked like it had anything to do with Civilization. I have Virus Scanned (Spybot S&D, AVG). I have defragged (I don't think this will do much, but worth a shot...), I have sacrificed a goat, and howled to my pagan gods for deliverance. I have downloaded the patch a thousand times, each from a different site, and none of them seem to work. I have downloaded the BtS patch. Surprisingly enough, it didn't do anything.

tl;dr-BTS won't install due to patch error. Patch can't be installed. Halp?

Details:
-Installed Gold Version (Civilization IV and Warlords expansion combined)
-Under the impression that Gold Version is patched to Version 1.74
-My computer meets/exceeds the min. requirements (details can be provided upon this if requested)
-The DirectX is also of the latest version.
-No scratches on any of the CDs.
-Gold Edition works fine, and the computer itself acknowledges it is there (i.e-shows up in add/remove programs; When disc put in tray, everything starts up)
-These are legit CDs. Nor did I install anything such as No-CD cracks, or anything else third party that may have mucked around with anything.

So, any help? I hear Beyond the Sword is supposed to be pretty awesome, and I want in.

 [party] Welcome to CFC :band:
First a disclaimer: They made a mighty mess out of Gold edition - mainly because the file system is different from the original versions. This is were the difficulties from the installs seem to come from and I know people here for whom it worked and others for whom it did not.
The first thing you really should do is uninstall everything civ-related. Make sure that your original half-install does not leave any traces if possible (If you know how to edit the windows registry try to get rid of civ in there as well - if you don't don't ;) ).
Then reinstall Gold Edition - do NOT try to install the 1.72 patch yourself it is only good for the not-gold version of Vanilla. Then install BtS it will try to update Gold Edition and it should work ok.
Probably Next week a new patch for BtS is due out. They seem to have changed some stuff for the installer, so maybe this got fixed as well (there would probably have to be a patch for gold edition - but that is a faint chance.
Hope this helps - if not please tell me, maybe I'll think of more :)

Already been done. Uninstalled, and damn near nuked the PC. Multiple times. The only thing having to do with Civilization IV is the Gold edition. Still no go on anything.

The thing with the patches is that it seems to come already updated to 1.74 on the Gold Edition. Manually installing the stuff doesn't seem to work either for Warlords (patch 2.13) or for Civ IV vanilla (patch 1.74). Neither seemed to acknowledge that Civ IV or Warlords is installed. The automatic updater says something about everything being hunky dory, and no new updates are ready to be installed.

Thanks for all the help. Any more ideas?

As for Registry, I figured that I'd rather leave that alone rather than accidentally blowing up my system32 et al.

vanilla and warlords are indeed patched as they should be. The patches for download simply cannot find the gold edition files because they were written for the file system of Vanilla and Warlords not Gold Edition - and for reasons only known to Sid himself they changed this file structure in the Gold Edition.
As for the BtS Install: there is a post that may or may not help - next week they will probably release a new patch for BtS and they have now been talking about some Gold Edition installer issues (related to MP games) it is therefore possible that some issues will be solved by that patch (though I am not too optimistic :( )

Tried. Played a rousing game of Solitaire. Failed.

Thanks a lot for all your help. I guess we can only hope for the patch, unless you have other ideas? I'm game for everything on up to deletion of system32.

Short of waiting for the patch and a possible solution there (which I am not too sure that it will come) how about complaining to contacting take2's customer support and asking them for advice? I linked to their contact information in this thread. Note: they are known for slow and unhelpful replies but sometimes they have a solution and it would definitely help if they realize that they caused and outright mess with their gold edition...

Popped off an email yesterday, got told in an automated reply that I should receive another email within 24 hours. Been upwards of 30 hours. Tempted to call, but getting shuffled from one manager to another with people who don't know jack about a computer doesn't appeal to me.

Is this sort of thing common? Didn't see that many threads about on Google. The only real forum that had anything about it was this one.

Are there any questionably legal witchcraft type cures out there that can allow me to download something, or rearrange the files to force BTS to install? I bought both of the games, and I have receipts. I'm willing to try anythign that will allow me to use them.

Unfortunately Take2 the parent company of Firaxis and their Publisher just plain sucks at Tech Support. The only reason Civilization works okish in terms of tech support is this forum - so yes this is common :(

Even if I knew of any I wouldn't post those since it would be against forum rules... I am sorry to say I do not have any more helpful suggestions

Hello forum,

I had similar problems, except I wasn't using Gold edition, I have each game separately. Civ4 and Warlords installed no problem, but Beyond the Sword was giving me the "Patch failed! Aborting installation" error. After fiddling around with it for quite a while, here is the solution I arrived at.

I don't know if this will work with the Gold edition, but this is what I did to fix it:

1) Uninstall everything.
2) Reinstall Civilization IV (Civ:v1.0, War:-, BtS:).
3) Install Warlords (and let it patch everything from the install disc: Civ:v1.61, War:v1.0, BtS:).
4) Download the Warlords 2.13 patch from here or here.
5) Update your civilization installation (Civ:v1.74, War:v2.13, BtS:).
6) Install Beyond the Sword (Civ:v1.74, War:v2.13, BtS:v1.0). :)

If everything plays out like it did for me, it will not try to patch your version of civilization (and fail!) and will get on to installing!

Hope it works for you!

Cheers,
phrzn

I have the same problem as Phroz! I have istalled both Civ IV & Warlords seperatly, but I get the same error message!! HELP SOMEBODY!!

While I do thank you for you help (honestly, I appreciate), I made the unwise decision of going with the cheaper Gold Edition. If I had known of any potential problems with installation (and why should I have? Most game companies manage to make sure their stuff is compatible with itself), I would have got Civilization IV vanilla, and gone from there.

However, I got Gold Edition, and that has Warlords and Civilization IV tangled together, and you can't install one without the other.

Thanks a lot anyway, comrade.

Hello,

Please try the following:

First I would recommend backing up any Civ 4 game saves you have for the games then to perform the following.

To fix this problem, please download and install the latest version of DX from the following link:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...38-DB71-4C1B-BC6A-9B6652CD92A3&displaylang=en

After doing this I would recommend checking/downloading the latest drivers for your video card and updating them if need be.

Here is the manual uninstall information for the 2 games, in order of their release.

BEYOND THE SWORD:

Open My Computer then open the Local Disk (C:)
Open the program files folder.
Click on the tools menu then choose folder options
Click on the view tab and tick the box labelled "show hidden files and folders". Press OK
Open the installshield installation information folder
Search for a folder named {32E4F0D2-C135-475E-A841-1D59A0D22989}
Right click on the folder and choose rename. Press the End key on the keyboard and type the word OLD. Press the enter key

CIVILIZATION 4:

Open My Computer then open the Local Disk (C:)
Open the program files folder.
Click on the tools menu then choose folder options
Click on the view tab and tick the box labelled "show hidden files and folders". Press OK
Open the installshield installation information folder
Search for a folder named {CFBCE791-2D53-4FCE-B3BF-D6E01F4112E8}
Right click on the folder and choose rename. Press the End key on the keyboard and type the word OLD. Press the enter key
Insert the Civilization IV install CD and open My Computer. Right click on the CD drive and choose explore,
Locate the setup.exe file and double click.

This will replace and overwrite any missing components that were preventing the game from being uninstalled normally
To uninstall the game, go to Control Panel>> Add/Remove programs and highlight the game in the list. Choose change/remove and follow the onscreen prompts.

Install the patches 1.61 then 1.73 for Civ 4 from:

http://www.firaxis.com/support/support_detail.php?gameid=6&patch=1

Then install Beyond the Sword.

NOTE: If you have Warlords uninstall that too and install it last:

Manual uninstall for warlords:

To whomever it may concern,

I have recently gotten both Civilization IV: Gold Edition and Beyond the
Sword. Installing Gold Edition went without a hitch, but installing Beyond
the Sword has run into problems. I try to install it, and after the
installation package checks my DirectX, it then pops up saying that there is
a new version of Civilization IV out, and tries to install it. I then get an
error message saying something along the lines of "Patch Failed! Aborting
Installation." I have tried installing manually the patches (Civilization
IV: 1.74 and Warlords: 2.13). I have tried using the automated updater that
came with the game. The updater comes back finding nothing new to install.
So, how do I installed CD?

Further Details:
-Installed Gold Version (Civilization IV and Warlords expansion combined)
-Under the impression that Gold Version is patched to Version 1.74
-My computer meets/exceeds the min. requirements
-The DirectX is also of the latest version.
-No scratches on any of the CDs.
-Gold Edition works fine, and the computer itself acknowledges it is there (
i.e-shows up in add/remove programs; When disc put in tray, everything
starts up)
-These are legit CDs. Nor did I install anything such as No-CD cracks, or
anything else third party that may have mucked around with anything.

Figured this was worth posting. About 11 days late (Got it an hour ago. Sent on Sept. 30). Haven't tried yet, but glancing over it, the guy kind of missed the point that the Gold edition comes fully patched and with Warlords/Civilization bound up together.

Looks legit enough, though. Worth a shot for anyone else with such a problem.

I'm having this exact same problem as the original poster. I also have Civilization 4 Gold edition and Beyond the Sword. I've tried uninstalling the game, reinstalling, updating DirectX, Windows Xp, Video Drivers, and no luck. Following those steps that tech support person submitted to Phenalphaline did not work either. What frustrates me is that when I got the game the first time, I installed it and the BTS without any trouble, and now it won't work because of that "Patch Failed! Aborting Installation." Help me out please.

Having a similar problem that I think I can fix with the correct patching. I have Civ 4 original vanilla, not gold. And I have BtS. Only difference is, I don't have Warlords. I only buy games when I'm back in the US, and no one carried warlords at the time.

Will this be an issue?

Nevermind about everything. Too embarrassed to say what the real problem was.

This worked for me. I have civ4 and warlords separate. My warlords was patched to 2.08, but I was unable to patch to 2.13 manually or automatically. And I was unable to uninstall Civ4 until I tried the above.

I just finished installing Civ4 and Civ4 BTS. BTS just installed okay without the patched failed message.

I'm going to attempt to install warlords now. I'm still not sure if I should patch warlods . I'm worried some stuff that was fixed in later warlods patched will bug out if I don't patch warlords. I'm mainly talking about warlords specific fixes here.

you may find that BtS installs some dummy warlords files itself when warlords is not installed and uses them for itself, if you install warlords and not patch it this might change BtS behavior if it now uses the files from the real warlords install...
