Build roads to a "to be" city?

Near the beginning of the game when you produce another settler, do you have him build roads as he goes up to found a new city?

Or do you send him to found a new city first, then produce another settler to connect the two cities by a road?

Thanks.

If he's only going a few squares, I usually build the road. Otherwise I build it later, as long as the new city spot has trade arrows. Basically, the earlier you settle, the better - as long as the new city is producing trade arrows (river squares, ocean, special terrain), and thus science beakers. If it has none, you may as well build the road. Or better yet, just settle somewhere else.

Militarily, building the road is good in case you need to run a defender there from another city. Circumstance will always override a rule, after all.

I generally expand and do all my improvements later on. I will usually have some settlers building roads though and eventually my cities will all be connected but it usually takes a while before they are all joined up.

I almost never build roads, maybe because my bad "build two settlers first" strategy. But it has worked just fine.

Roads and irrigation etc come after expansion. Main city builds settler or two, first level satellites build two or three for expansion before they get one for their own uses.
Main city gets a settler through NONE, and concentrates on building wonders.

I agree!

In the beginning of the game I never build roads between the cities. It takes too much time. Its much better to build many cities instead of roads (you want to expand fast).

Currently my style in this manner is in flux. I'm now leaning towards very early just getting the cities founded, then when I have 4 or 5 cities founded, I might build a road on my way to a new city site, but generally only if those roads will result in trade arrows for an existing or the new city, or if there is a military or trade reason to have them connected. If not, I may still just go build the new city and build road later. I focus on roads in squares already or soon to be in production to get the trade arrows, and actually connect cities by road later.

I agree with you Leo.

I usually do that. Sometimes, I ruild roads to my future City site, but only if I have the time.

This seems to be the trend of most people

At the end of the game I will set my enormous army of engineers to completely improving an area around the city site with RRs and farmland and then build the city there with enough time to grow to max size through WLTP days, having bought an aqueduct, harbour, supermarket and sewer system and then letting the luxuries do the rest :D. Instant whopper cities!

When I've just founded a new city the first thing I build there is a granary. Then I'll immediately build a settler that I use either to go and build another city or to build roads and irrigations for my newly founded city. Every single city in my empire always has one settler working to build roads and stuff. Improving AND expanding are both equally important IMHO.

I probably should build roads early on, but i never do until i can't pay for my city improvements like temples and i am about to go completely broke

I tend not to. I only build railroad (NEVER roads, I always wait till I can build railroads) networks between all current cities on the same landmass. And I only do that cos of the pollution usually made at that stage of the game!
