Building A City On A Resource - Noob Question

This is not correct. All cities produce 2 food, 1 hammer and 1 gold. The ONLY exception is a city founded on a plains hill which provides 2 hammers. I can count on one hand the number of times I have founded a city on a resource becuase working the resource is WAY more important than having it a few turns earlier. However, for some unknown reason the AI loves to settle right on resources. I would recommend not settling on resources.

That is not correct. There are many cases where settling on a resource will give you more than 2F/1H/1C. In my current game I settled on a Plains/Ivory tile and the center gives me 2F/2H/1C. I believe settling on a Plains/Marble/Hill gives you 2F/3H/1C. Settling on a grassland/Corn tiles does give you 3F on the start.

Not correct. The rules for the city tile output are fairly simple. The city tile generates a minimum of 2F 1H 1C. If the tile normally gives less than that, it will be boosted to these values. If it normally gives more than that, the additional output is retained. A plains/hill for example generates 0F 2H 0C by default. The food and commerce are boosted to the minimum, and the hammers exceed the minimum, so final tile output is 2F 2H 1C.

Hence founding on a resource MAY boost the city tile output. Founding on marble on a plains/hill for instance would give 2F 3H 1C, as the tile generates 3 hammers normally. Founding on iron on grassland however would give no boost, as the tile only gives 2F 1H by default, matching the minimums.
