Now pcs arnt generally space restricted, but you do get some people doing cool mods, an small form pcs do exist....

people have been making PCs for years

That's what I said... But what about laptops?

There are companies that offer barebones laptops which is about the closest you will get to building your own. As it stands, with a good barebones you can replace the CPU (as long as it matches socket), GPU (As long as the thermal solution can handle it and you have the right socket for it), RAM, HDD, Battery and Screen (most expensive, can easily hit 200+ USD )

Yeah, you can replace some of the stuff, but many laptops have proprietary features, and won't work with a standard MoBo. Sometimes, GPU's are soldered onto the MoBo, when they arent integrated fully to begin with.

The idea behind laptops is largely an expectation of total replacement every three years or so, and only minor upgradeability is common to all of them (RAM and HDD).

For desktops, you buy standard size cases and Mobos that are designed with these sizes in mind.
