just a thought:

Sea defense would be like Walls for the sea, so if there is a ship bombarding you could fire your cannons right back at it causing a small amount of damage (pretty unrelistic you would simply just sit there taking a pounding from a boat). maybe make pillaging ships immune, im not sure

Inn's have been instrumental in building communities (and destroying them lol) throughout history. maybe a +1 smile from wine, +1 unhealth or something similar. that or a general +1 smile, +1 unhealthiness as would allow you to ballance the two earlier on if you had angry cities that were healthy. would just be cool adition to medieval onwards.

havent really put too much thought into these but what u guys think?

an inn is represented as a market

But a coastal fortress that punishes a attaking ship could be nice

I like both ideas. I don't see how an inn--a building that allows travelers to stop and sleep and eat--is at all similar to a market--a building, or not, where people gather to sell goods.

Something I was also thinking would be good is "resort," which could be built in coastal cities or cities near tundra hills, snowy hills, or possibly even impassable peaks, bringing a bit of late game use to them...

Even if this wouldn't work as a building, it might work really well as a random event. Like, "Enterprising snowboarders in Boulder have bought a mountain and created a ski resort! +1:commerce:"

[EDIT]Oh, wait, Inn should provide +1 trade route for that city, or something like that.

Aye, the coastal fortress was in Civ 2. I'm quite fond of them, actually. They double the defense against bombarding ships.

defo should be a sea defense with protection from collateral per turn. maybe even chance of damaging bombarding ships, like an intercept idea. i like the +1 trade route for inn also maybe even if it was a 50% trade route so not too powerful. but along with +1 unhealth to make it a decision

while im in a creative / dreamer phase - why not a desert/snow promotion (some form of "extreme territory" promotion) ?

Coastal Fortress was in 3 also. It would be nice to be able to plant mines around the coast as a defensive mechanism as well. Then we could have Minesweepers::D

It would be neat if work boats could build floating sea forts that could house both land and sea units with a defensive bonus. The attacker would have to use a combined force to fight through the forts before they could get to the city. The British navy used to build such things.

I like your resort idea. Perhaps it cuold be expanded by having a travel agent building for other cities that provides money. Perhaps there could also be a national wonder like a theme park (Disney Land, Six Flags) than can be built when there are enough resorts or travel agents.

I really think that tourism should be a big boom for the late game as many places in the real world count on the tourism industry for the economy. Having outdated castles or wonders produce tourism dollars would also be a nice addition to the late game.

Maybe -5% research ("working late")?

while im in a creative / dreamer phase - why not a desert/snow promotion (some form of "extreme territory" promotion) ?

I think it should come together with another promotion, like guerilla or woodsman...

but specialised troops for desert/snow are realistic and separate from hill and forest troops. think iraq vs vietnam

tourism is cool idea. maybe a tech allowing for it? or getting to gimicky?

What we do need is a Whorehouse. Something like +3:) and +1:yuck: per trade route.

Spoiler :

Animal Husbandry reveal Whores.
