Is there anything I ca do to affect whether there will be many buildings standing in cities I conquer? It seems like they are generally wiped completely clean of buildings and I have to build them up from scratch. Is there any way to avoid this?

No.

When you capture a city by force:
- wonders and academies stay but lose their culture producing abilities
- national wonders are destroyed
- all other culture-producing buildings are destroyed
- all other buildings have 67% of chances to stay

National wonders can actually survive, provided you don't have the same one built in one of your cities. Happened to me several times and it was never a good thing, such poor choice of a city for that particular wonder . I think I captured Hermitage in my current game, so I'll check if if it's producing any culture.

I think that part of the reason that conquered cities seem so barren is that the AI doesn't always build alot of buildings anyway. So, you've got cities without much stuff to start, then destroy everything with culture and 1/3 of everything else, and you get a nice ghost-town.

Of course, you might also have alot of angry citizens, so you can always break out the whip and force them to rebuild the ruins.

If I'm correct, it's only possible if you acquire the city peacefully.

The last one with Hermitage indeed culture flipped before I conquered it, now that I think about it ( I was already at war with Willem and on my way towards the city). This is nevertheless strange because other cultural buildings are destroyed with culture flip.
Not sure about other cases because it's been a while, but I doubt all of them flipped. I could be wrong, of course :crazyeye:

Edit. Just checked, the Hermitage in question indicates the 100 percent increased culture output and 1 GA GPP as usual, but no culture of its own.

Why does everyone keep picking on me? :(

:mwaha: It was payback time. Serves you right for declaring on me while I was still building just to pillage my resources. BTW, you're much nicer on the forum than in the game ;)

Well sorry, but chances are I was just trying to strengthen my position against Monty. :D

You obviously haven't caught me on one of my bad days. :D

In short, culture-buildings and military-buildings go away in a military conquer. The previous asides still apply. :p
