Seems like a spiritual successor to Georgia, but more offensive than defensive with cavalry.

I guess Georgia+Basil II=Bulgaria

Bolyar is the correct spelling. They were a class of equestrian nobles. I presume it's a cognate of Boyar in other languages.

Maybe I'm still too civ 6-brained but these pillaging abilities sound extremely strong. I can remember getting 80-100 of a yield for some pillages in 7, so the traditions could give you something like 60 production in all your cities per pillage and you'll be able to pillage multiple times per turn with the commander making it movement-free. You could easily cut 2 or 3 turns off production timers in all your cities with one turn of pillaging.

I guess eventually you'll run out of stuff to pillage, and the penalty to CS against walls will make it harder to get your units onto urban tiles to pillage them.

I am confused, is the Combat Strength malus against Medieval Walls for your units or your opponent's?

It appears to be a malus for Bulgaria, encouraging you to camp around enemy cities and pillage tiles rather than conquer the cities

Some people complain about mali, but I really do love thematic balancing mechanics like this.

I planned to have a Greece > Bulgaria > Russia playthrough, but honestly Bulgaria’s gameplay doesn’t quite fit the puzzle. Fingers crossed for some form of cultural/economic/diplomatic Rus in the far future, I guess.

Now Bulgaria into Buganda, on the other hand…

Something tells me that an eventual Goth or Norse will fit in very nicely as the Antiquity Civilization for that path... all that's missing is a dedicated pillage leader!

Hello Wallenstein!

But wait, that‘s actually a good opportunity to add a French leader. It was Louis XIV whose order got us the phrase scorched earth after all.

With some of the abilities revolving around Great Works I see it more fitting for Catherine than Russia, if you choose her as leader. But honestly, I assume Charlemagne would be a go to for them.

You just described almost any Norse or Gothic leader, well maybe not Theodoric.
