THE PEACOCK WILL FIGHT!!

The military says 10 people died, but diplomats fear the toll was far higher. Thousands of others were arrested.

C'mon guys, if you're going to lie about it, at least make it somewhat believable...

i think that only adds another level of sadness to an already depressing tragedy

almost all the Western news media seemed to tout that "now we're watching and we will do something about it" as opposed to the silence that prevailed as the 1988 protests were crushed.
yet precious little has actually been done, and even taht is an overstatement of the actualy role and response of the democracies of the world. just as the streets and monasteries were eerily empty soon after the government's counterstrike, so have been those promises of action. sure, it is in part due to refusals by the Chinese government to apply any pressures upon the junta. but also, i feel the monks and people of Burma have been cheated. so much support, apparently, so many words spoken by the press and diplomats, only to be followed with so little action or change.
and such statements as that the democratic opposition will have no say in a constitution only reinforce that grim view.
i hope that in 20 years when another bout of demonstrations begins, the world will finally step up and do something. otherwise, the courage of the next generation of protesters will again be wasted and the dictators will only be further emboldened to rule as it pleases
