Since you joined in January (same as me) I thought you would know this by now.
The suicide ship is sending a ship that might sink to explore. You might discover new land or meet other civs doing this.
The Dromons are available after map making.

The Ai doesn't appreciate bombardment, see thier use, or lack of use, of artillery. They use bombers, but other bombardment units don't do anything but sit.

I beg to differ. Dromons are the Byz UU, they build plenty of them. Also, I am getting bombarded by them as we speak. Of course it's not much against a cav army... Sorry Theo...

Yes, the AI certainly harasses with bombardment, but how many of your ships have they sunk?

I mean, I haven't had them do anything useful. Annoying, sure. But stack up 25 and bombard my city before attacking, nope.

    Yeah, that's true.

Actually one time my battleship attacked a frigate and sunk without hitting it once... :spear:

But other than that, they don't sink many ships.

They can take roads out but the probability is unsure. There is a thread about bombardment rates if you want to look it up.

Yeah, even with cannons it's shaky, arty is when terrain bombardement gets serious.

One thing I have noticed is for some reason the byzantines really suck at land warfare. They also just seem to rarely get the strategic resources in a handy location. I just played them through 850 AD at Emperor, and trying to fight with no horses just really sucks when your fragile MDI's die on wounded Longbows. And watching enemy MDI's go through your Muskets like tissue paper just plain stinks. I guess I'm not going to be a fan of the Byzantines anytime soon.

Do any of the civ3 devs still lurk the forums? Would be cool if they could explain why Byz AI sucks.

the problem is that the AI just isn't good at sea invasions. Even at levels where they get ridiculous bonuses, they'll send 3 frigates along to escort 1 galleon carrying 3 longbows and a pike to invade your island when you have cavalry.

If they just build 10 galleons and dumped 40 units on your island, the human might have a big problem.

There are certainly traits that seem to lend themselves well to the AI - and the seafaring trait is not one of them. While the human player will run suicide galleys for early contacts, the AI won't. The Scientific trait isn't bad to the AI, but the industrious and agricultural traits seem to be recurring themes among runaway AI.

^ that's getting pretty close to spam.

If you like a little more historical accuracy, d'ld MEM. I'm playing as the Byzantines right now and it's a blast. They've still got the dromon but also have catapharacts and such. The level of detail is almost better than "normal" civ.

Medieval Europe Mod. No, it is not the medieval conquest, it's a mod: you can find it in the modpacks forum.
