The front as at 1844AD
Henry and his military advisor are reviewing the war effort in the Great Portugese War Room in the complete safety of Lisbon. It is agreed that the progress of the armoured divisions against the combined might of the fascists has been exemplary. Of concern, however, is the ability of the enemy to continue to make incursions deep into New Portugal. It is noted that at the former border between old West Azteca and the Mayans/Americans there remains much roading and rail infrastructure outside the cultural borders of New Portugal. The enemy has been able to use this to ship units deep into New Portugal and strike us where the defense is weakest. We need to lock this area up with cultural border expansions, and in the meantime keep a stronger zone defence/offense capability to limit the impact of the incursions. This may slow the rate of advance at the front.
The second concern has been with the performance of the marine corps. The preliminary naval bombardment has often been ineffective due to insufficient numbers of battleships. The targets are often outside the range of the airforce, for additional bombing. These factors have led to a high casualty rate in the corps, and limited success. It is decided to train no further marine units. Tanks are cheaper and more effective!
The third concern has been the casualty rate amongst the bomber squadrons. From a high of about 30 bombers, in spite of continual replacement, the total Portugese airforce now only has 17 bombers! It seems that these brave aviators have been shot down during offensives in American territory. Only the Americans have established an effective aerial defense. The bombers remain potent against the Aztecs, who have never had any airforce or air defense, and the Mayans, who had a small bomber squadron, but never invested much in defense. The bombers are also very effective in destroying enemy units that have entered New Portugal, although now there are insufficient numbers to completely hold the incursers at bay.
It also appears that some of our forces are now strategically misplaced. Before the Mayans joined their fascist brothers in an axis of tyranny against us, the war front had moved to the south. That is the American border. This is where most of the bomber squadron is now based, and where much of the artillery has been deployed. The bombers need to be moved north, and we need more of the artillery for homeland defense.
The meeting was finished with the unveiling of very early plans for a new super tank. We are already making spectacular progress with the existing armour, but we will soon be able to go into production with this faster and much more powerful version," stated the military advisor. "This will be the hammer blow that decides this battle for world supremacy."
1844AD cont - Heliopolis' marketplace becomes a temple. Chalco starts working on a temple with the help of civil engineers. It will still starve down, however. Tlacopan also starts a temple. A library is whipped in Byblos for culture. Much of the rest of New Portugal is put to producing culture buildings. We have 7 native luxuries now - the risk of flip is low.
In action by Boston, an elite tank promotes, and is immediately turned into the fifth tank army!
IT - The foolish Mayans have landed three infantry by Barcelona (in Portugal). We are also threatened by 8 inf and a settler at Elephantine (New Portugal, firmer Maya).
1846AD - Naval seige of Detroit (American coastal fishing village) - the naval bombardment destroys a fighter sheltering there, and yellow lines the defending inf. The marines go 2 for 1. We decide to destroy this little village so we can utilise the marines in a further assault.
A force of 4 Mayan cavalry near Atlanta is bombed into destruction. Another army lands in Alexandria, and the sixth tank army is formed.
IT - The Mayans make a major push on Huexotla. This city, our first on the major continent provides a gateway through the Egyptian peninsular. It is down to a single defending inf, but we hold firm.
1848AD - Naval seige of Baltimore (American size 12 city) - The foolish Americans are guarding this city with a handful of
regular infs. Send in the marines! For the loss of five marines, we finally defeat the three defenders! In anger at the loss of so much Portugese life, the marine corps commander orders the destruction of the city. "Burn everything!" Perhaps he realises that his time is almost up? America now has 8 cities, like the Aztecs. The Maya still have 18 cities, and would seem to be the most dangerous of the remaining powers, even if they do not have the Aztecs more advantaced technology. Domination stats 53/65.
The next logical American city to attack is the capital , Washington, however, it is defended by fighters, heaps of artillery nine infantry and a guerilla! We would need to send most of our armies at this!
Much whipping has happened in New Portugal, rushing the cultiure build program. Henry believes that this is just punishment for the brutality of the former Aztec regime. Now if only he could get his hands on Montezuma...but he has fled to East Azteca, where he is in hiding, but rumoured to be in Macchu Picchu.
Our forces advance into the Mayan territory at the foot of the Egyptian penninsular. Will the Mayans coninue the foolish pursuit of Huexotla, or return to defend their threatened cities?
IT - The answer is soon coming as the Mayans attack with gusto, and Huexotla falls.
1850AD - Dom Stats 53/64.
IT - The Mayans are massing for an attack on Atlanta.
1852AD - Seige of Ollantaytambo (Aztec) - The first East Azteca city to meet the Portugese armour. The inhabitants simply wake one morning to see two tank armies and a cavalry army charging out of the mid-continental jungle. It is the cavalry army itself that finishes the battle and alone enters the city! The bombers are again clearing the near territory of Mayan incursions.
