Calling all Civ Fanatics debaters

I don't think that's true. For a start, most OTs are not angry political discussions. Secondly, even the political discussions are not just purposeless venting.

I think you simply ignored or didn't pay attention to the more controversial political threads on this forum. Granted, there is less right-out youtube-level idiocy (although we've gotten a couple new posters who're at that level) but it's still angry political juvenility. Most attacks are more subtle, but it's still all there.

They are just for venting on miscellany to avoid spam in the main forums.
Avoid spam?

:) Like a roach motel, we check in and are not spamming in the Civ forums! See OT works. We aren't sabotaging honest Civ4 mod development or strategic discussions, by not turning Free Religion vs. Organized religion or Communism vs. Free Market civics with poli-sci, or existence of god debates.

That's not spam, that's driving threads off topic. They're very different things.

However you cut it or quibble it, that's why there's OT.

Yes. So on topic threads don't go... off topic. :crazyeye: I never knew that. Thank you for enlightening me.

I think wherever there is politics there is angry political juvenility. At least on a forum, unlike a newspaper column, you can answer back. But yeah, there are plenty of inane comments around even here. But is there anywhere better with the same popularity, diversity of subject and range of opinions as the CivFanatics forums?

I admit that I may have been biased from having preceded my posting this thread with hanging out in the World History and Science & Technology forums - there are learned essays erudite commentaries aplenty there.

I come here for the same reasons others have mentioned - there are lots of really intelligent, constructive thinking people who can argue in civilized manner :) For me as a woman it's boring to read all the political fuss going in there, but other topics make up for it.

You guys made me look up more information on things and stuff than any other debating forum.

NOW I R MOAR SMART! :)

I'd be interested in your project - please PM me when finished.

I agree that CFC's forums are a cut above the internet average, which is why I hang out here - but there is still a lot of immature behavior here too, which I could do without.

I agree on the World History forum - that's my favorite, with some real gems of information sometimes.

What I like here is the amount of people who debate - a large crowd of people all debating.

Yes, you can truly say that CFC OT are a real crowd of mass debaters.

this thread contains not enough poland.

Actually the OP's forum idea would be the perfect way to finally settle the Poland debate as there is no actual argument about Poland being Eastern European other than it was formerly being Communist.

I like the idea. The multi-quote function is not perfect for large threads, and it is a hassle to trawl through many pages of half-spam in order to find interesting points.
How would you decide what's useful and what is not?

I have very limited experience of other forums. This seems to be a forum with very wide-ranging subjects and a sadly dwindling supply of interesting thoughts. That's probably because I've seen much of what is posted already.

Rather than only including useful posts and throwing away not-useful posts, it just makes the structure of the discussion much easier to quickly absorb – like looking at a contents page in a book – so you can just get to the bits you're interested in and ignore the rest. There's also a bit of voting going on to highlight recommended posts. I know that's not very clear; I should probably have waited till I'm at liberty to be less mysterious before posting this thread.

Anyone else noticed that the quality of discussion here is much higher than on other sites?

Yes. In particular I find the diversity of opinions here particularly interesting, most of which are backed up with good reasoning and an open mind, which helps the atmosphere of generally high-ish quality discussion. There are also interesting cross-overs that I don't so often see in 'real life': for instance prominent left-wing posters being religious, and right-wingers being atheists. It is a healthy reminder that as much as common character stereotypes are based on reality, they never do it justice.
