I think you have the wrong era's. Dragoons would be cool. I am talking about way before gun powder. Remeber when William Wallace was talking to that one guys dad and they were saying how no one had ever stood up to a charge of heavy horse. I was thinking of something to supplement the regular horseman.

Those were what we would call Knights.

i'm sure the AI defense would cry out that AI doesn't cheat.. but probability appears to favor it more..

Try tons (!) of arty, it'll help! It'll slow you down a bit, but better getting slowed down than losing 4 out of 5 units.

Believe it or not, i hurled my cavalry against several Modern Armor units, and managed to get thru with minimal losses...
Of course, i had my arty pound the advancing hostile units to 1 hp each...

Not having MA's, i did not send my tanks as these will remain blocked in the open after the fight (the advancing MA's were 2 tiles away). Cavalry was the key. Each surviving cavalry unit retreated to a safer place after it attacked the MA pack, and after the last MA was destroyed, i had only one Cavalry that remained on the open as i occupied the conquered tile (i could afford loosing it)

Bottom of the line, Cavalry can be useful even in Modern Age, if well supported, especially for hit and run maneuvers.

I just made it to the Modern Era without researching Military Tradition!!! I have a couple of Knights galloping around, that too cuz England sued for peace and gave me all their techs.. i don't research Chivalry either... the trick is to wipe the ones on your island out before they discover Pikemen or Riflemen (maybe difficult on levels higher than Regent) and then beeline for a stronger naval unit till u get infantry and then start a world war.
