Panzers are awesome if the enemy doesn't have mech inf. Due to their 3 movement rate, they can take out half a civ in a single turn if u have enough.

So why not use calvary in the Renaiscance? Calvary against pikeman and musketman is equivalent to panzers against rifleman and infantry. Sure they have poor defense, but if u got enough, u'll be constantly attacking and rarely defending.

The calvary blitz is equally as effective as the panzer blitz. Besides, it takes a lot of time for the computer to get from the Renaisscance to the Industrial age and get rifleman due to stuff like 'Banking' and 'Astronomy'. Meanwhile u can go straight for Military Tradition once u reach the Renaiscance (only 7 techs away from the start of the Renaiscance).

A lot of games, I skip chivalry altogether because calvary are sooooo much better than knights.

I take over half of the world with calvary and the other half with tanks or panzers.

You spelled CAVALRY wrong seven times.

"Calvary" is where Christ was crucified.

If knights had a more realistic value you wouldn't feel that way: they should be 5.2.2. Knights in the game have an absurdly high defense valuie, and if attack was at '5' the benefit of cavalry would not be so much. For those interested in common sense, cavalry's attack benefits should end when riflemen start getting produced.

To me there is also a very big difference with a blitzing attack with tanks/panzers versus cavalry. Cavalry can attack one time, while tanks can attack twice i believe, this is very important ability for taking out a civ faster before he can draft more units on the next turn or move some into a city being attacked.

I was thinking the same thing  just hope no-one finds this expecting a christ in Civ3 thread.

I think cavalry is great and i use it for the purpose you've specified (although i've never used panzers).

I don't think the knight's defense is overrated at all, Zouave. After all, an ancient archer unit should have minimal chances of attacking and beating knights!! If knights were 5.2.2 they would feel much like the longbowman (absurdly high attack, but very vulnerable due to their puny defense

Evincar- go to the completed mods page, and look for Zouave's mod. He gives a very good explanation of why Knights should have a defense of 2.

I've used Cavalry just as MirandaCore suggests, with reasonable success.

However, since you don't have RR during the "window" between you getting Cavalry and your opponent gets riflemen, it's rather harder to coordinate a good blitz.

calvary? i thought it was calgary?

just one thing about cavalary .... try to be the first to get it.
You will conquer many cities:mad:

I hate the way fortified AI Riflemen need at least 4 of my Veteran Cavalry to get them down to 1 hp but when it's my turn to pillage AI territory each cavalry of theirs can take out one landed Rifleman without losing a single hp..

i'm sure the AI defense would cry out that AI doesn't cheat.. but probability appears to favor it more..

The cavalry blitz is awesome if you plan for it. Research towards Military Tradition as soon as you enter the Middle Ages, selling all the new techs to fund your research. You should have enough time to wipe out a couple civs with cavalry before anyone gets Nationalism.

There is a big difference between riflemen out in the open and riflemen fortified in a metropolis on a hill! Cavs can blitz riflemen if you have enough numbers to overcome their defense bonus.

Cavalries are useful, very useful. Be one of the first ones to reach them and almost never abandon them, even in Modern Era you can use them to pillage their resources, capture their workers or simply use them in peace to impede AI's movements throughout the continent, so never disband them!!

For me, if there are civs to attack and my empire is ready for it I nearly always blitz with knights. As long as you're not way behind in techs you meet very few pikemen, just spears :D

Of course, if there are still civs to be conquered by the time Cavalry comes around I blitz with them too. I tend not to make it to tanks, but appreciate their value if I do :)

Speaking of horses. I was watching Braveheart the other day and I got to thinking about the Horseman. Would it be cool if there was a option for Heavy Horseman? Not sure what A/D/M would be. I think it would add to the game.

That's true!:goodjob: Most of the time, I like to play China over Germany. The chinese raider blitz has always been great! I take over half of the world with raider and the other half with cavalry.:)

Dragoons. To fill the gap in this parallelism:

Spearmen - Horsemen
Pikemen - Knights
Musketmen - Dragoons
Riflemen - Cavalry
Infantry - Tank
Mech - Armor

(Dragoons were saber-wielding horsemen who generally attempted to outflank and overrun Musketmen before the Musketmen could reorganize and reload, such as during the Napoleonic Wars. Dragoons were made obsolete by the fast-loading, longer-range, and much more accurate Riflemen. Dragoons upgraded to Cavalry, that is, horsemen armed with repeaters. Historically, Cavalry were not very effective against fortified Riflemen.)

There always seems to be such a long stretch where Cavalry rule...a long gap between cavalry and the next really good offensive unit.
