Can a player with regular civ play multiplayer with someone with warlords?

I have Warlords and I let my friend borrow my original Civ CD. He hasn't had time to try to play yet, but I'm wondering if we can play each other in multiplayer?

If so, how does it work? Are the civs/wonders/etc limited to the original Civ 4? Will he, or I, need any patches?

I'm afraid you can only play multiplayer with people who have the same version of Civ as you, ie Vanilla (original Civ 4), Warlords or BtS.

I was thinking of getting Beyond the Sword anyways, maybe I can convince my friend to do the same

If you have Warlords or BTS you can play Civ4 with him, but he can't play WL or BTS with you.
