Can a unit generate multiple leaders?

Not sure about conquests, but I haven't heard of it changing.

In a word, yes.

However, you must upgrade the unit before you can generate another unit.

Example:

Your Elite Spearman creates a GL. You rename him to "Worlds Greatest Spearman" and off goes the GL to do whatever.

Then you upgrade "WGS" to a Pikeman. This makes the Elite spearman a Veteran Pikeman. WGS-Pikeman wins a couple battles, and gets promoted to Elite. After a while, he creates another GL. Then you can't do anything with it until you upgrade to Musketeer.

This can continue up to Mech Infantry, created six GLs with the same unit.

But once a unit creates a GL, it cannot create another one until it's been upgraded.

I've tried upgrading elite* units in C3C, but wasn't able to.
Anyone else notice this? I'm not 100% sure I checked that I had iron for my warrior* upgrade :crazyeye:

Did you have a barracks in the city? I often forget which city has barracks, and which doesn't.

Yes, I rushbuilt a barracks as one of the first things I did in that city. Good thing too cause I had a 3-hitpoint army to heal a few turns after that leader appeared :)

So use your GL as fast as possible so you can get another one :)

I did not know this... hmmm The same must NOT be true for Sci Leaders because I currently have 2.

It does not seem fair that you can only have 1 GL at a time, what if you're saving one for a couple of turns to build the Pentagon or something... I don't like this revelation!

Yes, you can actually have several SGL at a time, but I think that's because SGL are far fewer than MGL, in any given game.
It might not seem fair to only have one MGL at a time, but hey, that's the rule :) And if it's only a couple of turns for you to build the Pentagon, it's not very likely another MGL will spawn in these 2 turns, no ? :)

EDIT : oh, and Turner_727, now in C3C there's a sword icon showing if a city has barracks or not, just like harbors ! It's great, you'll love it ;)

Yeah, I saw that in a screenie, and forgot about it until you just said something. . . looking forward to it! And RnR, too!

if your having problems with barracks i have (counts on fingers) 2 (oh yeah, that's it....wait) words for you, Sun Tzu. i think on an average game i BUILD about 3 barracks, all on islands. i always think about building one early, but it's usually just not worth the 1gpt. plus when combined with leonardo, you can upgrade 2 units for the price of one! (now on sale at your local presopolis)

I am pretty sure I heard that once an elite unit has produced a leader (and by then become a unique unit in itself) it can't produce anymore leaders in the game

Sorry for this double post, but I just thought about one that had 11 leaders in the same round. Are you sure not 2 leaders can appear, or do you have to rush/create army with them immediatly to get the chance again?

You can upgrade elite* units, but it takes the down to veteran status, just like the others. They retain their name if you gave them one, and they can produce another GL.

Once your elite unit produces a GL, you must use the GL before you can gain another. It is possible to generate several GL's in one turn by using them right away. In some SG's the participants were rushing everything from harbours to nukes so they could get another GL that turn. Keep in mind, you have to have a very large force of elite units to be able to pull this off.

Nope once the unit is upgraded it can generate a new leader once it again reaches the elite status. I have tested this in vanilla civ. Also once the military great leader is used, you can generate a new great leader, even if it is the same turn.

I have had units produce leaders twice. I was playing as the Americans and had a horseman. The horseman became elite, and produced a leader. The leader's name was Washington, so I named the horseman Washington. A little while had gone by, and Washington had survived many wars after being upgraded to Knight and Cavalry. He became an elite again after the upgrade to Cavalry. He won a battle, and suprisingly he produced another GL, Sherman. So he ended up being Washington-Sherman. If you think that is a long name, then you should see one I had in an AW game named Tojo II-Hirohito IV-Tojo IV. So yes, a unit can produce many leaders in a game.

Not impossible, but extremely unlikely. Well, maybe not unlikely, but very lucky. But like Brewster said, you need to use it before getting another. So a GL was made, used, and freed up another elite to make another GL. Rinse & repeat until 11 are created.

Thanks, Turner. That is the first time I have seen a definative answer to this question.

 You're welcome.

This is exactly how to do it. . . If I have a calvary that makes a leader, it gets name First Calvary if it is the first of that kind. And I've had it where the same unit produced more than one GL, so the name was something like Second Knight Third Calvary. Yeah, it gets long. . .

Just imagine if Cavalry upgraded two more times. I could have Tojo II-Hirohito IV-Tojo IV-Fujiwara V-Tojo VI
