Is it possible to download Youtube videos? Is this safe? Would I likely get a virus doing this or does YouTube scan videos for viruses? Is this legal? There are several really funny commercials I want to show my Grandma but her internet plan charges her for the amount of data she downloads and I don't want to use up all her bandwidth.

(If downloading YouTube videos isn't legal please tell me so that I can ask a moderator to delete this thread. I don't want to do anything unlawful and I don't want to get banned from my favorite website by violating its terms of use) I live in the USA if that makes a difference.

Yup. Either Orbit (as mentioned). I sometimes use this site too which is pretty decent if you dont want to install something:
http://www.videodl.org/

As for the legality of it, Im not sure. But I honestly dont think they'd care as they havent tried to take down all the video download sites.

I can't get orbit to work with chrome, is there something I can use that will work with chrome?

did you try the site I sent?

Is there a good program just for recording the audio? Audacity is acting up on me and I can't record though the stereo mix option (stupid Windows7).

Just download the video and demux the audio then delete the video ;) Its what I do. If you want me to tell you how to do that just post.

demux the audio?

Well the way I do it is I save the video, load it up in Avidemux (google it). Just click OK to any dialogs that come up.

1. Then go to Audio > Main Track. If it says MP3, go to 3. Otherwise do 2.
2. On the left side there are two drop down menus. Go to Audio and select mp3 (lame). Now do #3.
3. Now go to Audio > Save. Choose where you want to put it and make sure to append the .mp3 it dont automatically do that.

Another way to download just the audio is to use stereo mix as an imput device (microphone) and a program such as sound recorder to record it. As I wrote in a previous post,
Yes it does(still exist in Vista), I used it for almost 2 years until I upgraded to 7. I used it 2 days ago on my windows 7 computer. They do however make you jump a few leapholes however to find it and get it working the first time . What you do is you right click on the sound icon at the bottom right hand side of your screen, click on recording devices, right click on the white area containing the list of microphones and check "show disabled devices". You then right click on stereo mix and press "enable" and then equip stereo mix as your default mic. "And there you have it"

Except that stereo mix is gone on some modern computers. I searched literally everywhere on mine.Of course you could use a double-male stereo cable but its a pain to plugin and also theres some degradation esepcially on cheap-ass ones.

You download a video when you watch it normally, so it can't be illegal in that sense - the only difference is you're not using your usual web browser to do it. Things would only change with redistribution.

There are some countries such as the UK with stupid copyright rules that strictly speaking say it's illegal to copy without permission at all, so copying a CD you own to your own computer or mp3 player is illegal, so theoretically this could come under that. But no one's really bothered about that.

I thought the ToS of this site covers linking to pirated files, not talking about it - banning talk of anything illegal would rule out say, an off-topic debate on the legalisation of drugs (and banning this thread would be like banning a thread where someone talks about copying a CD to their own mp3 player...)

ETA: Indeed, the Forum Rules only covers posting copyrighted material without permission, and links to "warez sites and program cracks".

Well, if you want to go technical when you watch a youtube video it gets downloaded to your computer temporarily I dont remember where but it goes away after a while. But if you go to a youtube page and watch a video. Then go to another page and then go back within a few minutes you dont have to redownload it. But if you wait like an hour it needs to be redownloaded.

I use JDownloader to download multi-link archives off Rapidshare or other file sharing services. I also know for a fact that JDownloader has a Youtube parser. All you do is copy the link, then go to the linkgrabber tab, add the URL and JDownloader will spit out several links (One for each quality setting on the video). You can then remove the ones you don't want and have it download the one(s) you do.

I read that Youtube's videos are presented in a flash based format. Is this true? I own a copy of Adobe CS4 Flash Professional, is there a way to download the videos simply using my flash program?

Or could I check my cache, wouldn't the video have to be there? Where is my cache any ways? I use Google Chrome as my browser.

I wonder how to make YouTube videos in a format that can be uploaded to an iPod Touch (I know, I know, there is already a YouTube app already in it. I'm referring in cases where I don't have access to an available WiFi to connect)

Well if theyre already downloaded on your hard drive maybe ffmpeg could do it. I wouldnt know the exact commands though someone else might

Just use Handbrake. I know I recommend it a lot, but as long as it can accept the input format, it will do a good job of it. It also has presets for the iTouch, so that will make things a lot simpler.

Well I could never get Handbrake working. Im not sure what Im doing wrong though.

Uhh, you install it, you select your input, your output and convert. If that didnt work, your input wasn't readable by Handbrake.
