Can I play or not?!

Apologies for sounding like a fool, but I am new to CIV 4 and slightly confused. I bought the game without even a look at the minimum specs as I assumed (foolishly) that they would be low, in the great tradition of Sid Meier games. I was wrong.

On installing and starting the game I discovered that I could see sprites etc, but not the land. Or the sea. Or anything but the stupid warrior man. This problem persisted, and I am now here to see what I can and can not do!

I have no idea if this laptop Dell Latitude 100L (2.4Ghz, 512mb) has a 32 mb graphics card, (no mention of it in on system, so i guess not) nor did I realize I needed one. At no point did the install software tell me my laptop was too lame, and indeed, said laptop also managed to run Pirates just fine 95% of the time (the petulant game was most unco-operative at first), which also required a GeForce 3 or above graphics card.

My question therefore is can I actually play the game? Do I need to find a patch? Is my laptop just not up to it? Or have I been spectacularly stupid and am missing something very simple?

I would like to add that having played Civ for many years, and reading some of the problems here, I am disappointed that the game has become so power hungry and error strewn the sake of superficial cosmetic improvement, which we all know was never important, and not the point of the game...
 
The black terrain you are describing is a common glitch with low end graphics cards. The 1.52 patch solves this on some borderline cards but its no guarantee. Post your dxdiag here and we can tell for sure (start>run>dxdiag>save all settings, then post the notepad file here).
 
Yes, I think it has something to do with T&L hardware support. The graphic card must support hardware T&L or you're going to run into problems.

A quick google on your graphics card shows that it doesn't have T&L support as is the case with most Intel IGPs. Civ4 does is not supported on IGPs for this reason.

'Intel® graphics products do not have hardware support for T&L. In most games, transform and lighting calculations can be performed on the processor with acceptable performance. A small number of games that specifically check for hardware T&L support may fail to run.'

In this case, it failing to run fully. This is why you may not be seeing the terrain and the only suggestion I can make is to upgrade to either a PCI or AGP video card.
 
I have a similar card (Intel 82845g with no tnl) but the patch fixed the same glitch for me. Try applying the patch and see if that helps.
