Is Strategic View fully 2d in Civ5?

I have a laptop that plays civ3 just fine, but chokes on even the early opening moves on Civ4 due to an inferior integrated graphics chip that can't handle 3d. When I heard about Civ5's strategic view I got hope that even my crappy laptop can play it now.

So will it be able to?

Oh God I really hope I'm not relegated to the strategic view on my laptop.

I can sort of understand having to play when I'm not plugged into a power source, but having to always play in strategic view is totally inexcusable.

If this says no, probably not. Not the end of the world. For all the cool stuff there is in Civ 5, Civ 3 is still pretty darn good. Then too, Civ 3 is very stable and dependable.

Keep it all in perspective. Waiting doesn't hurt, really, because the longer you wait the better Civ 5 will get.

You don't want to permanently play on strategic view. I suggest you get a new comp.

I'm quite used to 2d turn based games so it's not a problem for me. Plus during the civ5 gameplay stream earlier Greg said you could play the whole game in strategic view which I thought was cool (he also mentioned it was his preference).

I guess I'll wait when the demo comes out in about a week and see for my self though..

If the strategic view allows you to do things more quickly and efficiently, it is imaginable, that some competitive players will use it exclusively. There would have to be a prize money on the table, to make me miss out on all the eye candy of Civ5!

I thought they said in the live broadcast that the game cannot be played entirely in strategic view?

If your pc can load the game, and get into strategic view, than maybe.

The lady said that, but Greg early in the broadcast said he played mostly in strategic view. I think she wanted civ5's "awesome" 3d graphics to be the main selling point, even though in a turn base strategic sense 2d is more appropriate IMHO.

^^This. You will likely need to get into strategic view in the first place. If your laptop can't make the initial game loading (which would include the 3D graphics to some extent) then I don't see how you are going to get into strategic view. With my old laptop I was able to get into Civ 4 menu screen but if I didn't scale down the graphics then it would crash before I even had a chance to start the game. It would tell me I didn't have enough memory. It wasn't until I basically turned everything down to minimum that it would actually let me play. If you can get that far in Civ 5 you might have a chance, but with the full screen leaders you might still run into trouble.

The above is my best guess anyway
