Can not run

I bought Civ V when it came out, and installed it, but have not really played for more than a few moments.
Today I decided to have a go at it, having just finished a Civ2 game and thought I had better give it a try (I tried Civ 4 first but got warnings about it being incompatible with Windows 7).

Anyway I did the usual thing, put the DVD in the drive, selected setup and chose the run Civ V option when it came up, but nothing happened. I remembered that it was unfortunately a steam game, so found a saved game to double click on , but that did not work.
Of course I have a userrname and pw for Steam, but have not used it for ages, as most games are too much of a nuisance on it, or don't work, and have removed the desktop icon for steam.
So how do I play Civ V? Or, how is one supposed to play it?

I realise that I could H bomb it, by uninstalling everything to do with it, including steam, and start all over, but I thought you people might know how one is supposed to run an installed Civ V.

(The pc is quad core I7 with plenty of stuff and everything totally up to date, and a 30MBs connection)

There is a thing underneath about 5 tags, whatever they are - I ignored it so hope this gets through. I will give it a day and then come back and see if anyone knows and will help.

You don't have to have the disc anymore after you initially install the game. Search for Steam on the start menu, go to your games library, click Civ5, and then click the "Play" button. If you haven't played in a long time, then it may take quite a long time to download all the patches, but Steam should do it for you automatically. Or if you have a desktop shortcut, you can just start it that way. If you don't already have a shortcut for Civ5 on the desktop, right click on Civ5 in your Steam games library, and then click "Create Desktop Shortcut", and that should do the trick.
