Can someone help me figure out how to play the Caveman2Cosmos mod?

First off, I've been playing Civ 4 since around 2008 or so. I play 5 and 6 a little bit these past 10 years, but Civ 4 is what I play the most and its really the only video game in general that I still play

Lately Ive been getting back into Civ. Civ 6 is just okay, the city building is the only good thing about it. Civ 5 is okay, but the diplomacy, AI and combat in both 5 and 6 is still inferior to 4.

I downloaded Vox Populi mod for Civ 5 but I sighed when I started the game. I hate 5 and 6 because they are so much worse than 4. Then I came across these forums, which I've been to years ago. I learned about Caveman2Cosmos. It looks the kind of mod thats right up my alley.

I downloaded the 940mb caveman2cosmos file from moddb. I extracted the files. I copied the extracted files and put them in the mod folder for Civ 4 in the steamapps file. But when I load the game and try to play the mod, it doesnt appear on the list of mods

If anyone here could help me play this mod, I'd really appreciate it. This mod looks really good. TBH, I'd pay 10 bucks for it if it meant I didnt have to go through all this stuff. Ive never been good with computer files and mods, but Ive been a pc gamer my whole life.

First, welcome to the forums.

Now, regarding your problem:

From what you have written I would guess you installed the mod into a wrong mods folder. Even an empty folder in the correct mods folder should show up.

Civ4 has multiple Mods folders. One is in the same folder that also contains saves and the other one in the folder that contains the Civ4BeyondSword.exe. Mods should be installed in the one where the .exe is. (See the linked thread for example paths)

There are other Mods folders in the folder that contain the Civilization4.exe (base game) and Civ4Warlords.exe (Warlords expansioin). Neither of these two are accessible from BtS. These two might (?) not be present in the Steam version. Note that I personally have never used the Steam version.


You might want to read the C2C thread on running the game on steam as well, and especially make sure you are running the original release version.

Okay, I had copied the file and put it in the wrong mods folder. I tried copying it to the right one, and now I can load the mod! This is great! Thanks! Also it crashed when I was reading the "pedia" so clearly I'm going to have to figure other stuff out. But the first step is completed
