Can someone incorporate drugs into game?

Yea I was just wondering about why not incorporating opium, or coca plants and marijuana, amongst other natural (or man-made) drugs, as resources into Civ IV?

Significant events in history have been affected by drugs, such as the Opium Wars, and the U.S. seizure of drug money from Noriega's Panama in the 80's. Pre-9/11, Afghanistan's production of opium had dropped so significantly it was no longer on the U.N.'s watch list due to the hard-line Taliban outlawing it from their religion. However about a month ago, Afghanistan produced about 92% of the world's opium supply, increasing about 32% annually since the invasion of U.S. and British Forces.

Also you could incorporate civics governing the laws of the land concerning drugs and/or alcohol. What would a U.S. be like if it had lax laws like those of Amsterdam? or if it still had Prohibition in effect? or invade Colombia to seize these resources and use spies (CIA anyone?) to administer to other nations, earn a profit, posion the citizens and cost those affected nations a maintenance costs on their anti-drug laws?

What would also be cool would be the creation of DEA-type agents to counter these measures, reducing the maintenance cost of anti-drug laws and bringing more intel on whose countries are these drugs coming from?

Also the resources would be mild stimulants before the introduction of chemistry. Then it would develop into more powerful forms such as cocaine or LSD further causing damage to a nation's opponent. The development of methamphetamines would boost troop strength and/or movement slightly like the Germans did in their Blitzkrieg (and how Hitler was addicted to it), Morphines can have troops have higher WITHDRAW FROM BATTLE points due to its uses in wars such as Vietnam.

hell why not make certain drugs have a small boost to cultural wonders such as Hollywood or Broadway? Many artists (Elvis, Jimi Hendrix, Richard Dreyfus) have done great works while influenced or hungover.

Seizures of Cocaine/Marijuana farms from other countries would be a great loot and great incentive to invade other countries

As a matter of fact, ADD PRISONS!!! most inmates in prison are there due to drug-related charges and that is the modern form of slavery, corporations in real life use inmates to produce their products at a low-cost to labor and they never have to worry about an inmate quittin their job!! Therefore Prisons in Civ could generate gold, instead of easing unhappiness like jails do...

anyways anyone interested please let me know, I would like to have this option in my superpower to further enslave the rest of the world! MWAHAHAH!!!!!!!!:king:

Cuz it would portray a bad message or some garb like that. But it's a video game and little kids play it. I remember tobacco being in civ 3 conquests I believe. But there is no chance that happens dude

You could just add a few extra tradable resources into the game, and tie their effects to certain civics and buildings.

I'll leave the examples to others.

for drew tate, I'm talkin about a mod tho' cuz I know for sure this wouldnt fly on store shelves because we as americans are a bunch of PUSS IES when it comes to stuff like that (remember Grand Theft Auto)

There should definetly be drug corporations. Pharmaceutical company's profits have a huge influence on American civilization. This industry doesn't want to cure people. The big drug companies only care about money they are the real criminals.

I've seen mods with cannabis included as a resource and that is the only one that I think deserves to be in the game. Only because its uses include more than just the drug effects.

well, it's quite simple to add cannabis, coca and poppy as ressources....but do you really need the extra ressources?

a lot of ppl just assume they're included under "spices" lol

I know they already have jails, but its not the same as PRISONS! Jails circumvent unhappiness, whereas PRISONS, in real life too, generate profits. Like I said before Prison population are used by corporations as cheap slave labor, so if modders could put that in the game then I could have a stronger police state to reflect modern-day America :king:

Well hemp flowers(leaves) is used as a spice for some cuisines in asia. Not very common though

I think most resources have been fought over, check out the wealth Portugal gathered by bringing the first spices (pepper mostily I think) to europe. Too many resources added would unbalance the game but maybe make something called "herbs". Also the Pharmaceutical Corp. is a neat idea.

I like that idea myself but I don't think having resources that negitivly affect world view is doable, of course I'm not a modder...

The negative effects is a modern feature. Cannabis have been used for ages with less impact on society than alchohol. Coca-leaves have been chewed probably for millennia before it was first processed into Cocaine.

The negative effects should rather be tied to industry as drugs are generally manufactured. Experimenting lead to discoveries of Medicines and drugs with other effects. All discoveries that could be sold and made profit of have been used. That is why people refine plants into drugs like Heroin. People get payed for trying new medicines. Poor people are denied cures to deadly diseases.

Must say its a pretty good idea. Though would like to see drugs not as resources but maybe as a civic i.e Drug State. Where by a civ prodces a certain drug or drugs and gets a significant boost to its trade routes, however non drug state civs wouldd get really really annoyed at you flooding their streets with narcotics and you would suffer an appropriate diplomatic penalty, maybe even military action. Think it would offer weaker civs in the late game an option to try and boost their commerce, at the risk of getting beat up, just thinking aloud really.

Though the moral question is whether they should be included at all.

i played civ whilst on ketamine once. got seriously involved. i have no idea what i did, but my eyes did not leave the screen for aobut 2 hours...

oh, u mean put them into the game. hmmm. probably a bad idea on the PR front. drugs are bad m'kay.

Yeah, I've long felt "drugs" should be included. Some, like opium, could include a negative health modifier, but maybe a positive cultural one (lots of culture has arisen out of opium dens and use...just think of all the tapestries and hookahs and throw pillows and droning music out there ;) ).

Something like cannabis could include a culture boost, and, until plastics, maybe even +1 hammer to represent its use in the form of ropes, paper, oil, etc. Perhaps it could also cause -1 happiness under more dictatorial forms of civics.

Something like coca could include +1 health, +1 hammer or something to represent its less insidious use amongst native populations in South America. Maybe once scientific method is devised, it could become obsolete or switch to cause -1 health to represent the different form of use once cocaine became available.

Definitely could be interesting...

Incorporating Opium if only to be able to 'force' negative resources on an opposing civ for gold like the British did to China would open up a nice non-combat way to hurt your opponents.

There is one drug already in the game.... wine (( aka ethanol ) C'mon, don't say that the thing is called ingame by the name grapes.... What do you think that a winery improvement makes to the grapes that gives :) to people? ) . Saying that, I don't see why others can't be added ( at least coffee.... ), excetp to avoid resource cluttering ( like it happened in civ III )

I would still prefer adding "Prime Timber" or some other wood resource to enhance forests role in the game. The AI seems to ble clearcutting entire continents with no real consequences.

Ethanol, ftw! I don't personally drink, but I do own stock in ***. (Oops, ticker symbol has been obscured to protect the drunk!) ;)
