Hi, I have heard that IE on windows has some problems with certain types of transparent pictures. Can someone go to this page, choose a theme (other than default) and tell me if my quiz's logo appears correctly on the homepage? It should be round and not surrounded by white.
Please tell me if it worked and what version of IE you are using.

TIA,

Kinniken

PS: I am quite aware that the themes in question are ugly, which is why the page where you can select them is "hidden" ;) I had to make my site theme-able for University, which is why I made this.

Using IE 6.0, fully updated, I can see the white around the logo.

But, the problem isn't necessarily IE, it's the file type you are using for the picture. (some other browsers treat PNG transparency the same as IE does) You are using a PNG format, which although it may show transparent under some programs, it will not in most. What you need to use is a GIF format.

I went ahead and edited the PNG and made it into a GIF file with a transparency. Feel free to use it.

Bah. Yes, I guess I will have to use gifs instead. The reason I wanted to use PNGs is that they support more than 256 colors - my logo in gif does not look as good. Plus, with PNG I had the option of using an alpha mask to get rid of the jagged edges, while GIF only supports binary transparency.
I can very picky with that sort of things ;)

Thanks.

I totally understand. GIFs are a horrible format, I can't stand them myself. Lucky for you, you are only working with a round image and not lots of text and curves that you need to fade out to make transparent. Try messing with the dither effect to see if you can reduce the jaggedness of the GIF - I know the one I posted is a basic/crude one.

If only jpegs could support transparency, I'd be a happy guy.

If only IE would support PNG! Come on, every browser on the planet released in the past three years or so support them, except IE on PC! Even IE 5 for Mac OS does (including alpha channels). Not to mention that full PNG support was promised by MS for IE 4, four years ago...
Dithering will not help with the border - I would need either an alpha mask, or a dithering specific to the background color, which I did for the normal theme (using JPEGs) but which I am not prepared to do for the others.
Oh well, it will stay jagged.

Hmmm, looks like I am more screwed than I thought. All the logos containing white zones (basically all of them) get plenty of transparent pixels when converted in gifs right in the middle. No idea of how to get out of this one, bar changing them back to a close color manually... And that would take ages :(
