In the PDF manual maybe I missed something but tanks weren't stated to be unable to garrison. Can any units garrison?

Btw, what's the in game difference between mchanized infantry and tanks other than a small cost difference? And why aren't the machine gun and marine in anymore (or maybe I missed them)?

Unit can garrison city, not "units".

Any combat unit can garrison a city. When a unit garrisons the city, it just adds to the city's Combat Strength -- the unit doesn't fight. If the city's hit points are reduced to zero and the city is captured, the garrisoned unit is lost without a fight.

When garrisoning, the only thing that matters is the unit's combat strength. So yes, a tank would be a good city garrison, even though it doesn't get defensive bonuses.

I think ranged units actually fire.

Does the defense bonus from fortification count when adding the unit's combat strength to the city's?

And any other modifiers to the unit's strength, I guess, from promotions, Great Generals, and the like.

A garrisoned unit is not technically fortified. Promotions probably won't count, because the unit itself isn't actually fighting. Don't know whether Great General bonuses apply to cities.

If the garrisoned unit fires, it's no longer a garrison (it's just sitting on the city tile). This is in the manual: you can't fight and garrison in the same turn.

A very good point.

Page 73-4 of the manual says otherwise. "You may 'garrison' a strong unit in the city... a ranged unit will fire at nearby enemies."

Page 60: "A unit stationed in the city may attack surrounding enemy units, but if it does so the city loses its garrison bonus, and, if it’s a melee attack, the unit may take damage during the combat as normal."

I think what they're saying on page 73 is that you have a ranged unit in the city for its attack capability, not the garrison bonus.

From what I recall from the manual:
1. The unit in the city gets defensive bonuses from the city (probably from walls, ect... possibly just from the city itself).
2. The city will fall when defeated, regardless if there is a unit in the city or not. What happens to a unit in the city when it flips I have no idea.
3. Units are recommended to be around the city to fight attackers, the city only has 1 attack, but 6 facing sides.
