If you are from another country (such as say western Europe) keep in mind that food generally cost 20 or 30% more there.

I was watching CNN and this week they are doing a video diary on one of the reporters trying to live on food stamps, which are a maximum of 176 dollars a month. In most states they use state issued debt cards with the maximum amount added to the card every month. So when you are in the store you mention that you are paying with that and swipe it.

Here are the qualifications on it:

http://www.fns.usda.gov/fsp/applicant_recipients/fs_Res_Ben_Elig.htm

Now my family's income is too high to qualify, but if I could some how move out I know that I would qualify.

I usually do the shopping for my house since I am the one most likely to have Sunday off. In a month we only spend 140 - 160 per person. I don't understand what the reporter is talking about when he says that he is starving all of the time and the can't see how people make it on 5.85$ a day.

And you have to keep in mind that I am over weight (not by a lot but 40 lbs too high for army boot camp ). Everyone else is a average size (160 lbs for the men and 120 lbs for the women in the house give or take) And we are not going hungry. Yes we may go out to eat 3 or 4 times a month, but that hardly off sets the rest of the days.

The reporter said that the "trick" was spending that amount and eating healthy. Then he went on to say that 15% of the people in America are "starving". Starving? Not even homeless people in America starve. A lot of the homeless people I see are fat! So then he went on to this statistical definition of starvation by some government agency.
less than 50 grams of protein and 250 grams of carbohydrates a day
He said that a lot of people qualify because they eat junk food, due to it being cheap and calorie pack to satisfy them, but they don't get enough protein. Is it just me or does that sound like bad eating habits? When I hear starving I think, emaciated not fat and unhealthy.

Here is what I ate yesterday to give you an idea: 1 large banana, 1/3rd cup of blueberrys (estimate). 1.5 cups of Raisin Bran Crunch (cereal) and some sugar added 1 cup of 2% milk. 3 slices of whole wheat bread with soy based Margarine. 2 cups of whole wheat pasta (bunch of seasoning and olive oil as well) and 3 ounces of chicken. 3 cups of sweet ice tea. 100 calories worth of chocolate.

All together I ate 5 times. Off the top of my head I would say it was at least: 25 grams of fiber and 50 grams of protein, a little low on the vitamins and mineral. Calorie wise, doing it in my head I would say it was 2,000 - 2400 calories worth of food.

Yes it is not all organic or a number of other things people consider necessary in their diet, but I fail to see how you can not be a functional albeit slightly unhealthy person with a 176$ dollars for food.

*Edit: we are going by your defenition of starvation in the poll questions, not mine which I explained as emaciation.

I could do it and still have beer money at the weekend. :)

Tesco value products all the way. In fact my house bud actually lived on about half that a month for 3 years during his degree, I'm not kidding either he used to buy like 10 tins of crap beans for a £1 on special offer and stuff like that. Tuna and pasta bake nigh on every day though. :)

I could easily survive on £10 a week.

Any student or ex student could, I think it's referred to as basic training more or less. How to survive on virtually nothing and still piss it up at the weekend 101.

weetabix for breakfast, Loaf of bread and sandwich meat for lunch, spag for dinner survived like that pretty much for about 4 years!

We have Tesco in the U.S. now. It's called Fresh and Easy. I don't know if it is set up the same way, but let me tell you. That is the bachelor spot! By far the my favorite store.

It would be hard to get proper amounts of nutrition and diversity on that amount. $6 a day is doable, but it's unpleasant unless you're doing it willingly.

I spent a lot less than that a month on groceries. I have the advantage of living in a fairly cheap area though. In order to do it, you have to...

1) Cut most of your *junk* food out of your diet.
2) Be willing to buy "Valuetime", or off brand stuff
3) Buy stuff in bulk (this is how I can afford meat on a regular basis)
4) Clip Coupons

I do that, and still have enough left over to buy "quality" on a few things...like getting the nice spicy brown mustard instead of the crappy ValueTime yellow mustard.

It isn't the most healthy diet in the world, but with multivitamins, and not buying super junk crap (like cookies), I survive okay.

You get diversity from hard work, not government hand outs! *smacks poor person*

If Alexander conquered the entire world wheat bread, chicken, olive oil and wine that tasted like pruno. The poor will make it. /conservative

Here's a good site for determing nutrients in foods: USDA site.

I spend about $30/day in groceries for a family of 5 (kids: 6,5, & 1). That includes diapers, detergents, contact sol., etc..., but I still think it's a bit high since cooking for a large family should be more efficient and cost friendly. $6/day/person is definitely do-able but you would need a plan (weekly menus and such) and would have to bypass name brand if you want fresh produce and meats.

The last time I went grocery shopping, I paid $80 canadian. that's about $65 american.

The food I bought lasted me well over 2 weeks. and it wasn't just "student food" either

2 weeks ago I bought $80 worth of chicken breasts and ground meat.. that is going to last me a couple months at least.

Hell yeah I could survive off $176 a month. It's not really that hard, unless you have others in your household to feed, too... which I don't think we're assuming is the case here.

:) You just asked me if I could do it.
I don't know if a person could get their RDI of the various nutrients from natural sources off of $176 per month. At least, not without some massive 'repeated meals'.

We repeat meals all the time at my house. I think we hav maybe 12 -15 meals at most that we cook over and over again :p

The way I eat I probably wouldn't get the RDI if I had 1,000 to spend on food.

Four people so far think that there are no starving people in the U.S.?

What?

What is this, Iran?

In all honesty I don't think anyone in the U.S. actually died from starvation last year. It's to easy to go 2 jail. All you need to do is piss on a police car and you can get locked up for a while.

There are other countries where you just get pistol whipped or shot with a bean bag bullet for such an offense.

Starving and dying from starvation are two totally different things.

There are 300 million people in the U.S. None of them are starving right now? Really?

I've been without food for a few days when I was younger when we were really broke. Yes there are people without eating disorders who are going without food for prolonged periods of time. But I don't think they are dieing. When I hear starvation I think dieing.

I just clicked on both bottom options so i didn't have to think too much about it.
