can you remove a tech?

I'm hoping someone else has tried this before I go off and do it. I realize that any affected items (buildings, units, religions) would also have to be changed, but aside from that - can you remove a tech entirely without crashing the game or confusing the AI? I plan to reduce the number of techs and rebuild the tech tree, then redistribute excess research points among the remaining techs for each era.

As long as you make sure none of the other xml files refer to that Tech, then yeah, that's no problem.
