I cannot remember what the keyboard shortcut is to automate the privateers, so they go around on their own. I *know* I have done this before, but how...?

If somebody knows, please let me know. It's not in the Civ III manual (I'd swear it used to be...)

Aha! OK, thank you thank you thank you! :)

Does that work with any of the other units also, by the way?

Yes, this works for all units (even settlers and workers if you so desire .:p ). I use it for scouts. The auto-explore isn't very efficient (does alot of back-tracking and going in circles) but it sure saves some time.

Thanks! That'll save me a good bit of time. :)

Auto explore for Scouts, Workers, and Settlers is not safe if you have Barbarian level set higher than Sedentary since they can easily walk into the arms of Barbarians. If you do this, set Barbarians to Sedentary or less.

You're right about workers and settlers. But with scouts, since they have 2 movement points the auto-explore is turned off if they run into a barbarian and still have 1 movement point left, so you decide where to send it. Since the scout has limited vision, you still run into barbarians sometimes when you've used up your last movement point and then find a barbarian.

And when the Barbarian is a Horseman? Then that extra movement point may not matter. It is too easy to miss things using AutoExplore. Just another area I prefer to micromanage since I have found that I can chart a better explore route than the AI.

I appreciate some like to let the computer do much of the work, considering how much time that can save on even a standard map when you have 200 Workers. I just have found that I can do better at deciding what and where I want my Workers to work. I still use sometimes the Road To and similar commands.

I have learned that micromanagement in many areas increases my chances of winning.

Using auto-explore, do scouts and other units go straight for goody huts or do they tend to do a bit of exploring around the area before popping them?

Units on auto-explore will go straight for goody huts if they see them. However, when you get a map from a goody hut, and that map reveals another hut, they won't always go straight for the second hut when the hut is still in the fog of war. Also, like I said, auto-explore isn't the most efficient, since the scouts won't always end their turn on a mountain for maximum vision, some will go and backtrack to reveal just 1 tile that was uncovered, they like to walk on every single tile on the coast to reveal every possible sea tile, etc. And sometimes if there is a peninsula of jungle, you'll have a bunch of them all trying to uncover the same tiles.

For me, they seem to have a little better luck of finding huts and when you got 20+ scouts running around on a huge pangea map, auto-explore saves ALOT of time manually moving each one around. And I like to play an expansionist civ with no barbarians, so then you don't need to worry of barbs, unless some other civ popped open a hut.

Can Units like Warriors, Spearmen, Galleys, Ironclads, etc. be put on autoexplore?
