Cannot Locate DVD-ROM

alright, so i've been able to load and play civ 4 for ages, but after a long break of not playing it, now when i try to play, it comes up with a 'cannot locate dvd-rom' message. i had the same problem when i first got the game, and i don't remember how i solved it. i have searched around and tryed many different solutions, including:

-trying the other disk, as the labels are mixed up between the install and play disks.

-diselecting everything that runs at start-up in msconfigure.

-searching for my DVD drive and running it from there (computer can't find the drive.)

i know this problem can be solved because i did it before, but now i can't remember how to solve it. i do have a legal version of the game, my drives are okay, and i didn't mess around with my hardware to solve it last time, if that helps. any help would be greatly appriciated, thanks!

is this game patched to date?
what operating system is this?

i have windows xp, and i'm unsure if it's up to date on patches. i dont think thats what i did to fix the problem last time, but i really dont remember. how would one go about checking for new patches? sorry, found the patches on their site, but i do have the most recent patch i beleive.

also my computer doesn't even recognize that there's a disk in the drive, thought i'd mention.
