When I select play in steam I get the option of starting Civ 5 and Civ 5 (Dx9). I choose the first of course and then it asks me again if I want to play Dx 9 or Dx 10/11. I choose the last and then nothing happens. No crash, no error message, nothing.
If I instead choose Dx 9 in the last screen it start fine, but with some weird graphical errors in some, but not all, of the icons in game as well as the background screen in the main menu.
I would love to post a screen shot or two, but even though pressing "print screen" in the game produces an image file, in the -my documents/my games/civ 5/screenshots- folder, it's just all black.
I have attached my dxdiag.txt if it can be of any help and I have checked that I have the latest drivers for my videocard (even though they are 7 months old, the are never the less the latest).

Looks like your video card is right at minimum requirements (Look at post #2 here). DX9 would be your best bet with settings down to low. Be absolutely certain to turn fog of war detail down to low. From my own fiddling it seems to make a big impact to performance while not taking anything "real" away from the game.

Well Will try that. Even though the game actually runs pretty smooth with medium settings. Not sure that the graphical errors are due to performance problems. They are kind of hard to describe when I can't take a screen shot, but it's like some of the horizontal lines have been moved to either side.

So something that should look like this

..------..
..------..
..------..

Looks like this
..------..
....------
.------...

If that makes any sense:confused:

I have EXACTLY the same problem with trying to start DX10/11. I can run the game in DX9 but it runs rather sluggishly.

My computer is 3 months old and runs Windows 7
Graphics card: GEForce6150SE nForce 430
4 GB ram, 64bit system, AMD Athlon(tm) II X2 250 Processor.

If someone has a solution I would love to hear it!

Thanks.

Does the game not even respond from the launcher? In other words, does the second option on the launcher look like text over other text?

Yessir, looks like text on top of text (see attached)

I'm on Vista 32-bit also. Laptop is Windows 7 and I can run it on DX10/11 mode even though its only a Radeon 3200 HD :p

I also want to repeat the report that even though I can create a shortcut saying to launch via DX9 It still sends me to the DX chooser screen.

Mine doesn't... It looks fine and when I click it the launcher closes as if the game was to start, but then nothing happens.

I have already tried to explain some of the graphical issues in Dx 9 regarding some of the icons. Another issue is harder to describe but I'll give it a go anyway...

When city screen is open the yield icons are kind of double as if they were mirrored at the bottom of the icon or reflections from a neighboring tile. Also when applying the citizen view
Spoiler :
(displays which tiles are worked and which are not (the latter indicated by some red symbol) and whether the governor has appointed the citizen (a green icon I think))

the icons are sometimes halved while others are partly visible even when not active.

Imagine two sheets of paper on top of each other. The top is the city screen and has a hole in it where the citizen-working-tile should be. Then the bottom sheet has all available citizen-working-icons printed in a square pattern. Normally the bottom layer should move so as one of the icons fill the entire hole so only one icon are visible at a time. In my game it's like the icons are to small and the bottom layer doesn't move correctly so the icons are not centered at the holes in the top sheet.

Hope this makes some kind of sense. If only I could take a screen shot and show it to you...:mad::confused:

That IGP is DX9. It is not capable of running the DX10/11 mode. And it is REALLY slow. It's a miracle that it runs at all :)

Edit: And just in case someone else is wondering: Yes, there ARE AM3 boards with a 5 year old chipset :crazyeye:

Aside from your video card, you can fix the launcher issue by closing Steam, right clicking on the "Steam.exe" and selecting Properties, then Compatibility. Click the Change for All Users button, and change the compatibility mode to at LEAST Vista Service Pack 2.

I have the same graphic issues - messed up menu screen and some screwed icons.
I'm sorry I cannot offer you a solution, but at least I could take some screens which I will send to tech support too.
I will also open a new thread on these forums with the problem, because I don't have the Dx 10/11 problem, my card just doesn't support it.

Here's how you take screenshots (at least in Windows 7):

Open "Sipping Tool" (comes with W7).
Run Civ V in windowed mode (uncheck "full screen" in video options)
Alt-Tab out of Civ V and into snipping tool.
Click "new" in snipping tool. That will bring up Civ V and grey the screen.
Select the area you want to take the screenshot of.
Save.
...
Profit.

But now I took all your screen shots for you.

I too am having problems re Direct x 10/11 which fails to open at all and I then get an error message saying windows has closed CIV 5. In Direct x 9 the game runs OK but all the supposedly English text looks like Cyrilic script though it is English and SOME words are decipherable

Mine runs (slowly) on DX10/11 but the graphics crash around turn 50. I can't even start it on DX9 to see if that would be better.

That is what my screen looks like when I play. I was thinking my video card was going bad but now that I see other people are having the same problem, I guess I will wait for a patch.

My system is as follows:
Win 7 64 bit
4 gigs ram
C2D running at 2.67
Nvidia 7950 gx2

I am considering buying a Nvidia 450 since I have seen prices around $130

Thx

Did you try to update your Vista installation?

What do you mean? I think I'm caught up on patches for Vista.

Or did Firaxis release a vista patch for Civ5 to fix the Vista issues? My first time using steam so I don't even know where to go look for patches there.

No, sorry, i meant microsofts patches, because one user reported that it worked after he updated his windows vista installation.
