My Dell Inspiron 8200 has a borderline CD/DVD drive. I usually find myself using a CD/DVD drive remotely on another computer when installing games taking up most of a CD or DVD. I had to do that today installing Civ4. S.O.P. for me.
However, I never had a problem using my flaky CD/DVD drive to simply start a game. But apparently I do with Civ4. It will not recognize the play disc in my laptop's "borderline" drive.
So no problem, right? Just run it from the remote drive...wrong. Disc 2 does not have any autorun or other executable program which could possibly pinpoint the new location of the play disc. And it won't ask for a new location after checking the local drive and finding it wanting. I cannot use my local drive and I cannot use a networked drive, mapped to a letter or not. So I am kinda peeved. What kind of write protect is being used here? I own a legal copy, I should be able to play it.
I always play Civ3 from my laptop. I should be able to play from my laptop. (But after reading all the laptop horror stories, I may have gotten off cheap.)
Well, I am too burned out for now. Guess I will install the game on my network computer instead. I hope I don't run into any other problems there. Just another idiosynch with the new release.
Really lame, though, since there does not seems to be any true tech support out there for the new Civ4. Who is the chick with the British accent telling me to call back in 24 hours?!
